Dan...you should just go pick yourself up a Pioneer DEH-P7600MP

I jsut got mine last Friday and I am already in love with it...most functional, affordable, and great sounding unit for the money I have ever known of. It's great. Gotta love Pioneer.

As for the old unit. I think you should give it some rest

 

i have problems w/my headunit also its a pionner 8600MP sometimes the screen just freezes or completely goes out when doing this its still playing the CD weird..

Dang, this is bad timing. I just dropped $150 on a helmet for NASA HDPE in March. Looks like I'll be returning the helmet to replace my head unit.

I really did love that Pioneer head unit though! Does 4 years sound like an early failure?

 

I wouldn't return the helmet because of it Dan. Just deal w/it for now and replace later. The deck in my Camry has been dead for a few weeks.

 

You could always check the wiring...maybe you have a bad ground wire. If this is the case your deck would shut off when it lost the ground and then turn back on when the ground was reconnected.
Or maybe the deck is just taking a crap finally and the internal power supply is going out. From my previous experience pioneers last a long time though so four years really isn't long at all.
Any way you look at it, checking you wiring to make sure something didn't come loose is worth the time...could be something super easy to fix. Hope this helps...Travis

I can live without racing for the time being, I can't live without a stereo. You're good with this stuff....you think the head unit is dead?

 

I had the same problem. Since it is a detchable deck when it goes out push it against the unit and that should fix the problem.

I got the 860MP. IT is badass.

 

Actually I just remembered that Circuit City installed it and they guarantee the labor for life. I'll have them look at it ASAP and try to figure out what's wrong.

 

Circuit City checked it out. Couldn't find any wiring problems (that would've been a result of a bad install). He said that intermittent problems are impossible to diagnose without sending it in. That's about $100.

I said screw it and dropped $197 on a Pioneer DEH-P6700MP. Free installation. I guess 4 years isn't bad, I got my money's worth.

The sales guy tried pushing me into Alpine, claiming it "has better sound" but couldn't really back that up with a specific feature or reason why. He did agree that Pioneers are decent and the MOSFET amps are good.

A bit OT here, but Circuit City will no longer be carrying Alpine so they're closing them all out at good prices.

have fun with the new HU. im trying to figure out how to flush mount mine from the article..

 

I paid $199 for the old one, so I didn't really have a problem spending that kind of cash.

BTW I don't think you can flush mount unless you sand down the console on the sides.

 

i have a Pioneer 8400MP with the motorized fold down face...i loved it and still do, but after about a year of owning it one day on a cold morning it just wouldnt turn on, stopped dead in its tracks...it was unde warranty so i pulled it out and sent it in to pioneer for free fixing..im not exactly sure what the problem was, but i think it had to do with the ribbon wire harness that controls the faceplate being worn out from motoring open and closed all the time....so i guess my point is that pioneers are great but do have random probelms at times

 

I've had alot of pioneer decks and never had any problems but 4 years is a long run for a deck.

yea, the only issue i have with my pioneer currently is that is has rediculously SMALL buttons.

i'm still looking for an external amplifier too..as good as MOSFET amps are in headunits, they still are too weak to really push any decent aftermarket speakers.

probably the optical pickup is going bad, you could go to Bby and have them do a real cleaning, and if they are the least bit competent have them re-adjust the optical focus, as it does tend to slip out a bit....
