ok well yesterday i got my new skunk2 mega power cat back exhaust for my 96 GSR. i installed it this morning and have been driving it all day. i been having a problem. small i hope. i had to take the CAT off (diconnected the two o2 sensors) because of some installation problems but i put it back on. (and connected the o2 sensors) i noticed that the check engine light was on, and stayed on. i know i connected the o2 sensors back in right. ALSO i noticed a bad smell coming from my exhaust i think. its a sweet smell, i know thats a sign of a blown head gasket but could that be a caused by installing a new exhaust system?????? the car has never had a problem before makes me think twice about the gasket. any ideas?

details:
1996 GSR
126,xxx miles
DC 4-1 headers
new Skunk2 cat-back
changed oil and fluids 1,000 miles ago
1515

New exhausts tend to smell a bit odd for a little while, it's perfectly normal. It should go away soon once everything burns off
This is true. The new exhaust on my MR2 had a coolant-like smell for about a day or two. The smell is mostly the result of the burning off of cleaning agents used before the exhaust is packed and shipped.

The check engine light, however, is another story. Pull the code and see what it says.

i wouldnt worry about it just yet, go to autozone and get the CEL checked, i bet you is a dead 02 sensor, i which case just buy the 45 dollar bosch or ngk brand which are plug and play and you should be fine. A new exhaust can smell odd for a week or two. But i bet you anything that the o2 sensro got messed up while it was out, they are fairly sensative

the correct way would be to waft the exhaust up to your nose with your hand so you don't get a straight shot of it directly up your nose.
So you had to watch that movie in chemistry too lol...but it's pretty apparent that the exhaust smells funny for a few days after you get it as everything is burned off.

Same story for my motorcycle when I got my Yoshimura exhaust. x5 it's just stuff to keep it from corroding and what not.

UPDATE!!!

i finally got a chance to go to my buddy's and look at the "check engine" light code. as i hoped it was:

P0135
41
Primary HO2S Heater Circuit Malfunction (Sensor 1)

and

P0141
65
Secondary HO2S Heater Circuit Malfunction (Sensor 2)

im guessing that it was because i turned the car on while the cat was off (to get to work) and the light just stayed on after it was re-connected. well we reseted the code and its stayed off all day :)
thank you TI.net for the great info, this is a grate sight
