I was planning on re building my gsr with higher compression pistons, rods, intake, header, and probably some other addons. I was just wondering if i should be using some engine management or will the stock ecu be able to handle the add ons.?

Like CJ said you will need some sort of tuning. I would go with the hondata s300, it is very very easy to use and a very good tuning program. If you arent looking to spend 600 dollars on a tuning device then look into uberdata/crome and find a good tuner close to you that can chip/tune your ecu on one of those programs. I had gsr tuned on uberdata for around 150 dollars including the cost of chipping my ecu. My turbo hatch already had crome pro so all i needed was a tune which cost me around 100 dollars. Both cars run very well and there is no reason to look past the cheaper versions of tuning(crome, uberdata, etc) as they have been tried and found to be very sound.

me i would recommend hondata s100 for teh person who desnt know what they are doing. you can easily hookup a s200 to it for tuning. thats if ur on a budget. plz stay away from vafc's or w/e in my experience they are not worth the money. not enough adjustment. but if ur going all out and have confidence ur self get the s300 definatly a welcome upgrade. you can get a chipped p28 with hondata s100 for 350 from king motorsports. Cant beat hondata in my opinoin . not a fan of aem ems either.

You don't NEED a new ecu program, but you will WANT one if you are expecting to get the most out of your mods. I.e cams, intake, exhaust, header, etc.
I completely disagree. You need Hondata/Crome/Neptune etc not only to get the most out of your setup, but also to run it safely

If your going to run higher compression an aftermarket ecu/piggy back (such as hondata/crome/neptune/aem ems/...) will be needed to adjust the ignition timing as to not have detonation, adjust air/fuel ratios in certain rpms/throttle positions. It will also let you adjust the vtec crossover which will be different on an aftermarket set of cams.

Definitely. The stock ECU has some flexibility, but once you start adding a lot more air and fuel, it really can't keep up.

Not tuning is like going 9/10ths of the way there.

To get most fuel mileage and performance for all the add ons, (why waste the money if not tune it to what you built!)

I have an all motor type R swap in my LS. with stock ECU Vtec was way off 4400 verses tuned to 5200, fule milege was 20 mpg, anf horsepower and power curve way off...

When tuned with cam timing and Hondata S100 (3 hrs of tuning on dyno) Yes its not cheap, but worth it..

Dynoed at 193 HP and 135 TQ.

I do not have a wild set up, so tuning to me is well worth the $$$$

Why would you buy all of those expensive ass parts, painstakingly check clearances, build your motor only to not spend a few hundred for your thousand dollar contraption to not run right. I do not understand why people insist to skimp on tuning. You guys have to understand, all those JDM parts means nothing if the very thing that GOVERNS those parts does not recognize whats in there and how to handle it.
Think about it.

definately aggree with u must tune ur car if u want it to last and perform like u payed for the mods. my ls/vtec turbo 315 whp 266 tq 10 psi 34 mpg. i know ur na but we're "basically" talking about same factors here. "BASICALLY" would never see those numbers or realiability untuned. ive had a tuned stock b16 sir 2 put down more hp than a "cheap ass" with a gsr. with bolt ons. I personally dont thinks its an option but mandatory.

Basically put it this way. If you put on more than Intake, Header, Exhaust and Cat, you're going to need to tune for safety and optimal performance.

And even then, with I/H/C/E you could squeeze out a few extra horses with a good tune.
