is white smoke always bad?

I have wondered this ever since I got into sports compacts... it seems over 1/2 the time when you see a civic/eclipse/integra/prelude etc that when they shift, you see a little white puff of smoke from the exhaust sometimes...... today i drove my beater while my friend drove my teg and it was ok, but when he downshifted from 5th to 4th i saw a puff of smoke.... seems like it only happened on downshifts, the smoke isnt anywhere near constant.... i recently had a bad oil leak, but it was under the car, and i assume it would just burn off, not come out the exhaust... i also have a test pipe, so i know that adds some **** in the exhaust that could get burned and smoke off....... my compression is solid 176-180 across the board... roughly 60k on an hmotors b18b jdm swap........

my question is, how come it seems so many cars blow smoke when you downshift? surely this many people can't have issues.... on the way home the other day, i came across 10+ civics on the highway and we ****ed around for a while, taking turns racing etc.... and almost all of them had this smoke when they downshift... i can't believe we all have problems, especially when my car runs perfectly.... but when people have to follow me, they ***** about the smoke and the smell of the exhaust.... anyone shine some light on this for me?

my mods are ihe if that matters

well my coolant level stays constant, and i never overheat.... i run around 125 degrees on the hwy and 165 at idle..... i think it might have to do with being catless, maybe there is always that smoke stuff, but a cat burns it off, while a test pipe lets it go thru, and it is burned up and smokes???? Hopefully someone can confirm this for me

my oil is perfect... valvoline synthetid blend. car runs perfectly as well... like i said, there is nothing wrong and i never even realized mine smoked until today, it's not like billowing out, but it's definitely there mostly at wot.... is that just natural when you remove the cat for a test pipe? that was my thinking but i could be wrong

coolant level is good. stays constant, the resevouir tank always is at the same level, and i am not over heating... also bad headgasket makes the car run ****ty, and i am running normally..... if i had not seen the smoke today i never would have even known, it runs normal and head gasket problems affect performance im pretty sure... can someone with a test pipe confirm if they sometimes blow smoke shifting and at wot?

Smell like gas at all?

No, it won't. Car will run perfectly normal. You will just see sporadic overheating or running hot.

The only smoke you should really be seeing at WOT is a bit of black if any at all...I smoke a bit of black but that's because of my tune and my setup...

Should not be white, however. Somehow, coolant is getting into your exhaust.

smoke is bad. smoke comes out because ur jumping about 1500+ rpms in one shift and causes the friction in the engine to rise and burn something if it isn't in good/proper condition. also u shouldn't be using synthetic oil if your engine wasn't using it to begin with. it cleans off oil build ups in the engine and most of the time in older engines, these build ups cover up leaks, etc. so get it check out homie.

no, it doesn't smell of gas at all, except of burnt oil from the bottom 1/2 of the car being coated with it... the smoke itself gives off no smell that i can find... my car runs under 180 at all times... not sure what normal temp is, but the stock temp guage has never moved past the normal level....

how big of a problem is this, if i don't overheat, or seem to be losing ANY coolant whatsoever... is this another problem about to turn from minor to major, or what? cuz the smoke is definitely coming right out the exhaust, not around it but right out the can... how come i see so many civics and integras with this, is it associated with being catless? I heard from a friend that all cars have that smoke, but the cat basically eliminates it, but since i am catless nothing stops it from flowing out the back... sound right?

well the motor is used. i didnt have it since the first mile... and when are you supposed to switch to synthetic then zefoxe? I think you have some mis-information... i heard 150,000 is too late to start synthetic blend, but this motor has give or take 60k miles if what hmotors online says is correct

its never too late to start synthetic or switch back.. i've done it on 150k+ cars, all oils are compatible.. smoke in between shifts shouldn't be much of concern, could be valve seals.. white smoke in general should be a concern unless its condensation and that will only happen during start up. you can do coolant pressure test to see if you find a leak in cooling system..

so yeah, white smoke unless its startup is no good, meaning your coolant is getting through somehow..

That is an old myth. I switched to synthetic at 250k in my accord...I had no leaks or anything. Let's not spread that old man's tale please.

not tuned... this car is just a beater til spring when i get what i really want... i posted about is a tune necessare a few weeks ago... i mean a tune for relibility not speed... anyone who wants to go fast and buys bolt ons is going to be sorely unhappy, i learned that the hard way.... but no justin, no tune.... can't justify spending a ton on something like hondata, do i have any more cost effective solutions? i am anti safc as well.....

alright thanks i will.... with lower compression id notice a slight power difference right?... i am going off the butt dyno now lol... but yeah, it was 176-180 last time i checked it, about 3 months ago... i want this car to last 5 more winters or so, so i better get a small issue like this fixed before it turns major.... but justin do you know why this is so common? i am sure you've seen this in countless civics/tegs... is part of this due to running test pipe?... makes sense that the cat would filter out some of this stuff that is burning up in my exhaust

it loooks white to me... never seen burning oil aka blue, but 95% sure it's white..... if it is indeed bad valve seals/rings, where do i go from here?

i was not even worried but i figured i would post to gain clarification... can i stop the problem now, or do i just need to wait for it to get worse and then replace parts?
