Hi, I'm trying to understand the main difference between choosing helmets for Road Racing/Autox/and Motorcycle. Aside from the ratings, M and SA. What is the difference between the helments. I know you can't assume that a Helmet is a helmet but I don't understand the differences between an M and an SA. Plus also can you use SA for motorcycle or do they cover both? I'm very confused when it comes to these ratings. Thanks in advance for the info.

the problem with the HANS comes in when you race Integras and also race in formula cars, since the angle for the HANS restraint changes depending on your seating position. If you race in both types of cars (touring cars or saloons as the Brits call them AND formula) it can get expensive to buy 2 HANS devices. 1 is already expensive as it is.

you want to make sure you get SA2000 certified helmets not old SA95 standard (used helmets) which are no longer valid.

SA = "special application" (automotive racing)

M = Motorcycle (not sufficient for automotive racing).

SA helmets are made to take multiple impacts (such as hitting head on roll cage or just various parts of the car if the car happens to flip). M helmets are made to hit once and be done with (you smack the road, and the helmet is done). SA helmets also have flame retardant nomex inner linings whereas M helmets do not (you get thrown from the motorcycle, therefore away from flame that might be coming from the engine).
