wow, this is like the longest running mystery on TI!

For the USDM trannies that have a VIN plate on them you can determine some basic vehicle information by looking at the VIN number.

Sample VIN:
JH4DC228*WS000001

Broken down as follows:

JH4 DC2 3 8 * W S 000001

The first three characters = Manufacturer Designation.
In this case its from Honda Motor Company (duh!!)

The next three characters = Chassis code.
DB7 for 4dr nonvtec.
DB8 for 4dr vtec.
DC2 for a coupe w/ a vtec engine.
DC4 for a coupe w/ a nonvtec engine.

The next character = Body type and transmission type.
3: 2dr coupe/5 spd manual
4: 2dr coupe/4spd auto
5: 4dr sedan/5sd manual
6: 4dr sedan/4spd auto

The next character = Series of Integra
1: ITR
2: RS
5: LS
6: GS
8: GSR
9: GSR w/ leather seats.

The next character has no significance

The next character = a code for the model year.
Unfortunately I don't have the info that relates the letter to the model year, except for the letter W which was for the production year 1998.

The next character = Factory code
In other words where your teg was made

Last 6 digits = the serial number

In this case, our sample VIN on the tranny tells us that ithe donor car was a 2dr GSR.

In an effort to help people in the future.......lets start to compile a list of the production year vs. letter code so that people can tell if they're getting an older tranny or newer tranny by asking the seller/vendor for the VIN.

Please only post the year and letter if you are the only person who has owned the car, so we can make sure that the letters & production years are accurate. In other words don't post if you bought the car used, because the previous owner could have had a different tranny put in the car for whatever kind of reason.

No.

GSR's use the S80 trans. ITR's use the S80 trans. LS/RS/GS also use the S80 trans.

The Y80 was found on my old 94 LS trans.

you got lucky if you have a y80 in your ls bc i the car club im in we have 4 gsrs and everyone of them have y80 trannies and then we have 2 ls and they have s80 trannies and s80 are a piece of **** bc everyone i koe with a s80 there third gear grinds and then their 4th starts grinding and i know maybe 3 cars like that and the y80 third gear ratio is shorter

check it out....http://www.allmotorhonda.com/techpages/B-series_Tranny_specs.htm

Well i have a 94 ls and mine has an y80 trannie and my buddy has an 95 ls and his is an s80 and he seems to switch gears before I do and his transmission is crappy because all s80 trannies grind 3rd gear

I had both opened up and side to side and completely forgot to compare them

I would *think* that as someone mention earlier in the post that you could call a Honda dealership and check the VIN on the tranny to see what it was removed from if your tranny has been replaced. b/c I have a Y80 that came with my 94 LS swap and 2 S80 one that was a swap into my GSR and one that was removed from a 95 LS.

I have a trans out of a 1996 LS coupe and a 1997 LS 4dr. Both trans are S80, both trans have factory LSD, both trans also grind 3 gear lol (as someone stated above)

I have been told that all the S80 trans are LSD transmissons but different gear ratios depending on the trim model the trans went to (LS, GSR or ITR). I've been told the Y80 are non LSD.

If this is true then no one who has an ITR or ITR trans (as long as they 100% sure its from an ITR) should have a S80 trans.

If your transmissions are original LS transmissions then you do NOT have LSD! and NOT ALL S80's have LSD either!

All 94 and 95 B-series transmissions do not have a stamp to Identify. 96+ have a green vin tag on the front of the tranny next to the block code.

The S80 and Y80 markings dont mean a damn thing. I as well as just about everyone else on this site that has dealt with these trannies know that s80's came in 94-95 Rs,Gs,Ls, Gsr and Type R's. Y80's came in 94-95 Rs,Gs,Ls,Gsr, and Type R's.

I have had two 95 gsr's, one with an S80 stamp and one with a Y80 stamp......both the exact same tranmission.

I have also had/swapped many Ls trannies of the 94-95 years......both with Y80's and S80's......again same transmission.

As previously stated you can drive the car and tell which tranny is has by the speed and rpm's.

96+ Trannies have the green vin tag on them, the 4-6th letter/number state what chassis the original part is from. For example

JH4DC2XXXXXXXXXXX tells you that the tranny/part came out of a 96-2001 Integra Gsr

JH4DC4xxxxxxxxxxx tells you that the tranny/part came out of a 96-2001 Gs,Rs,Ls 2 door.......I could go on with this forever, but you need to search and learn all the chassis codes.

I dont think it has been mentioned but JDM tranny's do not have the vin tags.

The only factory equipped transmissions with LSD are Type R Trannies. They are stamped on the casing
