Hi,

I live in San Diego, CA. I was pulled over last week for missing my front license plate (broke off few days prior). The officer said that was okay, but asked if I had any modifications. I said I have a carb legal intake. He asked to pop my hood. When searching through the engine bay, the cop noticed that the VIN Plate/Sticker is missing or at least was not located in its usual spot (Tranny/Left side of engine). I told him that I have never even noticed that, and that I've had the car for 6 years. PS: I have had a cop search my engine before and they let me go.....

The car has been smogged many times before. I have the pink slip/insurace/registration in my name.

He suspected that the engine is stolen and Towed my car!!! He said a referee has to verify that the engine is not stolen.

They took pictures of engine bay...searched my trunk.. etc.

Is this right?? Am I missing something here? Because I am the second owner, the previous owners bought the vehicle directly from the Dealership brand new.

Can anyone help me out with some info for location or VIN sticker/plate on a '96 LS integra.

Thank you.

I never replaced the tranny. Not sure if the one previous owner replaced it it only had 51k.
Would the engine vin be visible with the heat shield ?

Are they allowed to tow my car based on this ?
I dont know cali laws on that.

Look at the front side bottom of the block, right above the oil pan. There should be a green VIN there for the engine.

I have a 94 GSR and it DOES NOT have the vin plate on the tranny, but I know my 99 LS did

I was going to comment that I didn't think the old cars were marked on the tranny...

My 95 gsr tranny had no tag.

I cant look at my 96 at the moment.
*EDIT*
My 96 LS DOES have a trans tag.

Incorrect at least for 96. My 96 LS does have the tag on the trans and block.

Haha yea i caught myself and fixed it. 94-95 have stickers on the tranny instead of a vin plate.

yeah they do fall off....I have had mine with it half way hanging...no worries...from my understanding there are 2 differrent places the tranny and block have their serial numbers....i may be mistaken on the block but not the tranny....

This happened to a guy i knew...he knowingly bought and put a stolen Transmission on his car--Dumbass, he got pulled over going home, got checked, no serial number on the Transmission, after they kept the car for a while i guess investigation. they notified him he had stolen parts in his car and it was gonna be crushed. About 2 weeks later i saw it on TV on various times and channels...sometimes they still play it it's the White EG hatch.

Anywaist...im sure you will be fine especially if you are the 2nd owner and the original owner's got it from the dealership...Just call PD and check on the status....

The only transmissions they cannot track are the JDM ones.

Good luck, hope you get her back soon.

you should take this officer to small claims court for not knowing where to check for your vin on the engine and make him pay for all the time you've had to rent a car. he's basically impounded your car for not having a vin sticker on your engine, when it most likely does, and the trans doesn't.

my 96 does have the vin sticker on the trans but he should have checked the engine if he impounded the effin car.

I agree with tlangy....i cant stand people who are incompetent in their job especially when it affects the public......Take this cop to court...atleast contact the court and ask to see what you can do..

What i would do for sure is contact the Police Department that he works for and speak to his Supervisor or submitt some kind of negative comment against him.
This might not be his first time doing something like this. If it is his first time doing it then he will be more knowledgeable next time. Or he might already have a record of this and we can get him fired.

Im not for getting people fired but Police officers do hate us who drive imports...so when they try to get me for not doing anything like they did to you i would go back for them...

Stupid cops
