Me bieng very Nieve I bought xm radio and subscribed, Just last month I was pulled over doing 90 in a 75 the police officer said that The computer tracks all satillite transmishons and they can track speeders aka He hunted me down because I had xm radio, He knew that I had been doing 120 but since hegot me on radar at 90 thats what my ticket was for. Long story short I hate xm radio

they can calculate your spead from xm radio because it has built in tracking

its like this lets say xm radio sends updates to your reciever every 30 seconds

@ Xm radio Update A you were @ mile marker 419

@ Xm radio Update B you were @ mile marker 420

if you travled 1 mile in 30 seconds then you were going a speed of 60 miles a hour

get my point on how it works?

(im not sure about how often xm sends updates those numbers above were just for reference)

Uh, XM tracking your car? Somehow I don't think so. XM would have to transmit to do that, and then the receiver would have to continously triangulate your signal to determine your location and calculate speed. I think there's more to this story.

Cops ARE allowed to lie to you, yano. Someone probably called the cops on you for doing 120, then he sat up the road a bit with his radar gun and clocked you to get the required evidence. Either that or he saw you doing 120 and you slowed before he could get radar on you. If XM really somehow told him that you were doing 120, then he would use that as evidence and cite you for doing 120.

yeah, triangulation is necessary to determine location and speed... no getting around that... unless you're hooked up with 3 satellites that can tell how far away you are from each of them, there's no way to tell where you are, and therefore, no way to tell how fast you're going...

there are far more than 3 xm radio satelites in space triangulation is very possible

i want to clear something up though, i was explaining how a xm radio culd track your speed not how the cop knew you were going 120

he was lying to you i can tell you that for fact because there is no way xm radio has a partner ship with police departments nation wide

the day i got my ticket of doom the cop told me someone called in complaining about me switching lanes without a blinker (which is true)

some grandma or soccer mom probally got worried her cadiliac or grand caravan might be harmed so she called the popo

ask yourself this how did you cop know you have xm radio? did he look at your head unit or look in thre trunk for the reciever i just think he guessed

xm radio can't be tracked. they don't transmit. it's just like a handheld GPS receiver.
you wouldn't believe how many people i've heard that are afraid of GPS receivers b/c they think they can be tracked. well think again, GPS receivers RECEIVE, just like xm radio receivers RECEIVE.
and beyond that, i doubt the xm satellite system can be triangulated, since they don't have any way of telling the receiver where they are in order to triangulate from. it's not like GPS, GPS sends times and through a regimented orbit pattern and the time difference sent by the sats, positions are coordinated.

wrong.
i know you already revised your post, but there's still things wrong with this. first of all, how does your xm receiver know what road you're on, in order to know what mile marker you just passed? and what if you're not on the highway--city strees don't have mile markers.
and the xm sats don't beam directly to you, so they don't care where you are, nor does your xm receiver. the sats just beam down all over the place, and the receivers pick it up, just like satellite tv.

Doesn't matter how many XM satellites there are... I seriously doubt that the XM unit transmits data to the satellites. However, the XM unit itself could possibly determine it's location from the satellite signals, like how GPS does, but I doubt it's software does that and the cops still wouldn't know.

And the cop probably just saw some XM related hardware and came up with a story to trick AzLsGuy into thinking that he was totally busted and doesn't have a chance in court. Cops don't like it when you don't just pay your ticket and skip court.

I think its just like a cell phone once you get your bill in it tell you where is your outgoing and incomming calls (in those area, it can't track the street but it can track those city or town that your calling or receiving from) becuase I use to desighn Cell and Broadcast tower, antennas and Satellites for 2 years.

If you can afford to pay for friggin radio you can afford a ticket.

I see no reason to pay 200 for a new head unit AND 10 bucks a month.

Cops suck, this is another prime example. Wasting our tax dollars, and doing nothing to stop the 10 murders a day I hear abouton the news.

are you kidding me? the kid was going 120 and the cop was nice enough to let him off and say he was going 90. he got a ticket because he was going 120, and he deserved it. maybe that cop just saved four lives by giving out that ticket so this kid can learn a lesson to not go 120 and wreck into some soccer mom in her minivan with 3 children. i dont think thats wasting tax dollars.

Ladies and gentlemen,
I, being well versed in things and gadjets of an electomagnetic nature, post the following nuggets of wisdom:
#1 If the police use telemetry data from a privately owned device (such as your cell phone or the like) they must have a search warrant/wiretap (whichever applies). this would apply to a non-transmitting device that logs data (GPS, etc.) if they were to download your data. If they don't have a warrant it violates your right to privacy and is in admissable in court.

#2 if they use telemetry data with the permission of the owner (i.e. Rental car companies!!!) it is perfectly legal. I believe at least one TI member got nailed this way. oh BTW Lo-jack type devices installed in rental cars DO do this. this also includes transmissions from a device that is proprietary (you don't OWN it, you just lease or rent it)

#3 cops can lie thier asses off to get you to confess. Bring it up to the judge what he said. the judge will ask him (under oath) if he said it. when he admits to it you can pretty much guarantee your ticket will be reduced if not dismissed. Don't get me wrong I HATE soccer mom killing speeders so slow the [email protected] down!

#4 don't freak out about this stuff yet. the ACLU and freedom loving organizations will put up a big stink if this crap happens. not to mention the techno-geeks that invent this stuff would be the first ones to tip off the media about it.

Man, don't spread false knowledge by telling everyone that XM tracks you........that really pisses me off!!!!!!

I think this thread should be deleted.

EDIT: And besides, even though XM uses only 2 satellites, most of the signal received by the consumer originates from terrestrial repeaters.
