Use a multimeter to check the battery to make sure you have 12 volts if you haven't already. I'm not sure how recent the picture of the engine bay is, but the ground terminal looks rusty/corroded. I would also use a wire brush or sandpaper to clean the battery posts and the inside of the terminal connectors. Make sure that the terminal connectors aren't cracked or broken and that they will tighten down enough so they they don't move. On a lot of cars, bad battery grounds cause strange electronic problems. Some things will work sometimes and other times they won't or they will only work partially.
Once you've confirmed the battery and the connections to it are good, follow the instructions on Meltman's article for
Advanced Ignition Troubleshooting . You will need to look up the resistance specifications for your car. I think Melt's article is for a G3, a G2 should be very similar.
If that checks out, I would probably make sure that the new distributor was installed properly. Hope this helps. Good luck.
