ok when i go uphill in my teg, say on the interstate, i will usally pop it into d3 and it makes the rpms jump up like 1-2000 and makes it go uphill easier. is this damaging the trans??

also what exactly is it doing to make the rpms jump like that?

No. D3 is the same as "overdrive off" on other cars. The car will not shift into 4th gear. This mode is used when going up a lot of hills.

The RPMs jump because the engine downshifted into 3rd gear.
