I was at Dullus airport in Va picking up my aunt she was comming from Florida. I was loading my aunt bags in the car. Then a 5-0 came up and ask for my paper work. I said to the cop what for he said my tint is to dark. I told him Im not from Va I have Maryland tags. He said it dont mater which state you from. So I give him my paper work and my Eye doctor Note and a letter from the Statetrooper from Maryland. He called it in after 30 min, he gave me everything back and let me off with no ticket or warning. The cop got an attitude with me then I took off but my aunt was upset.

The thing I dont understand is, do the cop has a right to give you a ticket for the tint even if you have out of state tags?

yes the cop can give you a ticket.
if the speed limit in a state was 55 and you were doing 75, because thats the speed limit back home... would you get a ticket?

here's the general rule of thumb
#1 the laws of a state apply to all that is in the state. if you break a law in that state it is irrelevant how "we do things back home".
#2 reciprocity. the states must recognize your privlige to operate a vehicle regardless of the state that granted you that right. also if a state has your vehicle listed and registered they must recognize that too.
#3 why did you pull up to the airport terminal and get out of the drivers seat??? Iknow... you were helping her load her bags. BUT duh, after 9-11 they are Especially anal about people doing that. don't do it anymore and you will save yourself a ton of hassles.

BTW that's cool you didn't get a ticket.

I don't think they can do anything against you on this one...here's my reasoning:

-the front plate law, not all states require it. So, assuming you're licensed in a state that doesn't require it, and you're passing through a state that does...they can't give you a ticket for that.

...interesting topic.

That was I thought. I think the cop was being a jerk because my teg is hot (stands out). If this is going to happen like this at another state what is the point in having dark tint thats approved in my home state. The reason I brought this subject up because Im driving to Atlanta in September, 13hr drive. I dont want these cop to push me around in the future when I pass through another state.

I been push around to much and I been off the hook everytime.

Let me clear this up to end this matter. HE COULD HAVE NAILED YOU. Here is a good example. Radar detectors - legal in every state except Virginia. Many of us have learned this the hard way: if you are pulled over in VA and the cop sees your detector, you WILL get a ticket. The same applies to tinting....if you are in state X, and tints of any kind are illegal in state X, then regardless of the laws in state Y, you are vulnerable to tickets. It sucks, but there ain't nothin we can do about it

Cops in VA just plain suck. They're all out to nail everyone for anything. Never ever heard a "good cop" story from VA. If I could, I would just bypass the state! Hehe, too bad it's in the way if I head south...

regarding the liscence plate thing, refer to #2 above. the state who issues the plates is the authority regarding the registration/liscencing for that car. NOT the physical condition though.
VA cops are tough. especially the state troopers

my first thing is that i always thought that tint was a secondary offense. not primary. also, i've been let off all 4 times that i've been pulled. so i havent really had any issues with the cops yet. i mean where i live there are ToNS of out of state cars with outrageous tint because i live by an air force base and people bring their cars from out of state with different laws. and i've never heard of anyone getting pulled for tint, or 1 plate.

oh. the troopers are a holes, the cops are ok most of the time

So, I shouldnt worry about it? I never had this problem in Maryland, Wash DC. This is the first time in va. I use to drive everyday to fairfax and Skyline mall area and I never had a problem like this.

you shouldnt worry about it but there is always the chance, these cops here love to uphold the law. ive been pulled like 3 times and never ever gotten off the hook. sucks. yeah id just totally bypass the state if they are having a bad day then they will look for cars to pull that have illegal tint and other miscellaneous bs.

What about emissions testing laws in differnet states? I live in georgia but I am moving to Virginia to goto college. Where i live there are no emissions laws but what about the ones in Blacksburg? Do I still have to abide by them even tho I'm registered to GA?
