when i press down on the clutch pedal, about halfway down, i feel a little resistance, then it pops and goes the rest of the way down. i took it out of gear and and pressed on the clutch and it sounded like some one getting the groove on a worn out mattress. i have no idea what the problem is.

Your slave cylinder is probably on its way out. Check it out and check to see if it's leaking any fluid. If it's not, get some silicone lube and spray the crap out of the components.
