My good friend, BoostControl offered to teach me how to drive a stick for the first time in his 94 LS teggie. Well, needless to say, I think I now hold the record for most stalls in a 10min period, lol. Taking off slowly was my only problem. I would either stall the car or get a perfect race launch. Oh, & the hills...It was an act of god to finally get going on those. After a couple hours driving around, he said, "Dude, I'm suprised. You haven't grinded a gear once tonight." Right after he said that, you hear this nasty noise as I grinded 2nd. Damn Murphy's Law. It was fine till he just had to say that, lol.

I offered to let my friend drive my manual RS. "I know how to drive stick" yea right! He grinded every friggen gear and stalled every time we stopped. then he blamed it on my clutch. THE CAR HAD 24,000 MILES oN IT AND THE CLUTCH NEVER BOTHERED ME! I was so scared for my baby. He was grinding her and hurting her. "Thats it d00d your doin ok now" GRRRRINNNDDDD.

When I was first learning to drive a stick, my dad let me barrow his car for the prom. While I didn't have a problem going with out stalling, I did have a problem with accidently launching the car.

I ended up chirping the tires all night long at every stoplight.

haha, i learnd on our 94 escort wagon. The first time i my dad made me drive it he stopped at a rail road crossing , not just any railroad crossing but the ones that you can get air off of if you go over them @ 25mph. so not only was i scared to sh*t cause it was my first time driving a stick, but i had to start up hill, knowing that if i stalled i could get naild by a train.
it only took me like 20mins to get over the tracks lol.

since then ive only stalled 2x on the road (both cause the ac in the scort). and ive ground my fair share of gears along the way

My best moment was when my parents left to go camping and me having the house to myself. So you know what that means: PARTY. So we're all chillin and we ran out of drinks. My parents left the old civic behind thinkin I couldn't drive stick (well I didn't...had only a few 1st gear lessons but was never comfortable) so I decided to take it and go to the Beer Store to pick up the brew. Well I didn't stall goin to the store, but I got scared and decided to take side roads. Bad mistake...there were tons of those 4-way stops, and I stalled a couple times. But all in all, it was a good experience...
BTW...this was when I was 17 or 18...so I've been drivin stick for about 4 - 5 years.

Learned to drive on a stick, so no weird stories like that, but I have some funny memories. Probably the most memorable is when I'm sitting at a stop light going down a road that merges into one lane, and my dad says to me "ok, we have to get into the left lane, so just move of a little faster than usual so you can get in front of this guy". Being the first time I had been out in heavy traffic I was pretty nervous and tweaking a little. So when the light turns green I rev it up and practicly drop the clutch, pulling this fatty burn out and going flying down the road, further increasing my level of tweakingness, and so I switch into the left lane without looking behind me and narrowly miss the truck behind me. Anyway, that was my first launch, and I didnt even mean to do it lol

My friend tried teaching me on his 87 Civic, what a joke, I stalled repeatedly getting into first for an hour. We gave up for a while. A few months later, another friend tried teaching me on a very old VW Passat, this was even worse. I managed to get first a few times, but badly, either burning out or almost stalling. So I say what the hell and buy my Teg not knowing how to drive it. (My grandfather test drove it and took it home for me) So It sat in my driveway a few days (No Insurence). I tried getting into first, I did it perfectly on the first try, but i left the E-brake on! So when i got insurence my buddy with the civic began teaching me, as well as my grandfather. Anyway 5 months later, and I still suck at it, I grind 3rd all the time, stall quite a bit, and repeatly dump the clutch. I really suck at it. I have to turn down races to a firends Dodge Neon cause I cant luanch good enough! 5-speed isnt for everyone I guess...

Ouch dominick lol, thats a really long time, oh well, I guess its not for everyone. If I were you I would practice this alot, helped me learn to do it:

Find a slight incline, put it in first, and just practice holding the car on the clutch, letting it out a little, pushing it, putting the gas on abit etc, until you are intimatly familiar with the point at which the clutch bites, how much gas it takes to get going without bogging, how quick to let it out etc. Then just drive around a neighborhood nonstop and practice smooth starts for as long as you can stand. When youre driving try and remember to practice rev matching while shifiting, and get the feel of putting the shifter all the way into gear before you begin releasing the clutch (in, home , out). The more you practice the better you'll get.

I learned to drive stick when i was 16(I'm 17 now). My friend and a bunch of other guys went out in his Lexus SC 300 which was stick. I had never driven stick before but i kinda had a pretty good idea what to do. The first time i tried i didnt give it enough gas and stalled. The second time it was perfect and since then I've had it down. My friends were all jealous of me cuz they stalled about 20 times each. They all say it's only becuz I'm japanese and I have JDM in my blood. Hehe. Well once i got my integra, i already knew how to drive stick and was on my way. Lol, but on the way home i was kinda rusty, so at stop lights i kept chirpin, heh.

dom, you seemed to be shifting fine on the parkway!!!

thankfully i learned stick on my first car (87 toyota celica gt). my dad brought it home from maryland one night and i spent about five minutes in the driveway and then just left. After those first 5 minutes i got it down pat. good thing i'm a quick learner!

driving the teg is a breeze. except when i first got it i was sooo used to the crappy clutch and transmission of my previous car that i was afraid to shift fast for fear of grinding, going into first scared me cuz i was afraid that the car would stall...and being able to shift into third was a great convenience!

haha... we did this in my buddies Reliant K at like 60mph and ripped his oil pan plug off after we landed... it looked straight out of the Beastie Boys "Sabotoge" video...

Hmm I learned how to drive stick about a month ago and I got it down pretty good now, no funny stories really, except one time I was on a hill and this guy stopped right behind my ass and I didnt want to roll back and hit him so when the light turned green I did it gt rally style and did a phat burnout and around the corner. I still get nervous driving in populated areas.

I just got my gs-r not too long ago, got it not really knowing how to drive a stick, I mean i had before but mostly just getting it going from a dead stop is my problem. I still chirp a lot in 1st from a stop but can do fine in reverse, I think it's just that traffic makes me nervous. Oh and I'm also devestated when people get right on my ass in traffic like one of you said, especially when i just paid 10K for a car being only 17!
