Lighting problems?

1270 Views 16 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Disco_Stew
Started my 94 teg today. Here is what I ran into:

With parking lights on, all works normal.

Headlights on low; drivers low out and both highs are lit dim. + drivers rear turn singnal lit dim.

Headlights on high; works like normal (both highs lit full).

Inst. cluster left turn signal constantly lit dim, and flashes fast when turned on.

Windshield wipers don't complete the cycle (if I turn them off mid cycle they stop right where thier at).

Did something in my steering column die, or is this normal if one of the lights burn out?

TIA,
Ron

sounds like it might be an alternator problem....except for where u said ur turn ur highbeams on and everything works fine....check and see if any terminals are torn or insulation is ripped that would be drawing power.....but most likely it seems like alternator
Thanks, but I'm pretty sure it's not the alternator. I know usually the fast flashing is because a bulb is burnt out, but it doesn't flash fast when the headlights and parks are off. It's really strange that everything would go at once like this. Guess I'll just replace the driver's headlight and see if that fixes anything. It's the only EASILY diagnosed problem.
i know it wont be a headlight....ive blown alot of bulbs becuase one of my headlights have a problem taking in water....check all of your leads tho...one could be bare and gettin gunked up and slowing down the draw...but thats not a likely problem...let me know what u come up with
yea i have a wierdass problem like that too... My passenger side bright is dim. I can't figure it out for the life of me.

Yeah check your grounds. I had the same problem with dual fog lights. it turn out to be a ground wire that broke.
Update for those who asked. I haven't tracked it down yet but I'm 99% positive it's the ground as suggested. Everything started working on my way to work yesterday. I parked at work started checking it and when I turned on the highs it went back to having the problem.

Also found out that when the wipers are on, they would run, I could turn off the switch and they would continue to run intil I turned off the headlights.

I'll update again when I find out where the ground broke.

Thanks for the help,
Ron

I finally fixed the headlight/turn/wiper problem. It was the yellow ground box by the washer fluid bottle. I pulled the ground box off and grounded it. Everything worked back to normal. I cleaned the area around the ground bolt and bolted it back up. Everything works perfect again. Thanks for the tip Xtreme about the ground location. I hope this helps anyone having this problem.
Acuras/Hondas use special bolts in the body for all the grounds. They clean the paint out of the threads.
Frequently people have ground problems after body work or repairs when the proper bolts aren't installed during the work.
The previous owner told me the car had been in a slight front end accident before. Although I can't tell if the driver's fender was replaced from this accident it would back up that theory. Thanks
sounds like a short somewhere, get your electrical system checked.
