from about a week ago, my car has been making this tapping noise from the rear whenever i go over a bump or any irregularities on the road. at first i thought it was my itr sway bar that i had recently put in. (with a bsq mounting kit) i checked the installation again and everything seems to be in order. then i thought maybe it was the interior trim in the trunk. i took the plastic trim out and the noise was still there. now i'm guessing it might be the exhaust system - my teg is a 97 and the muffler section looks pretty rusty on the outside. the knocking sound is gone when i rev the car when it's parked. only when the car is moving and the road is rough. anyone with this experience? what could it be? help!

now i'm thinking maybe it's the exhaust. since the suspension is stiffer now, maybe the exhaust is bouncing up and hitting something. (it is attached with rubber hangers after all...) just another speculation.

its the boot lock, get some masking tape/insulation tape, and tape it around the lock, rattle should be gone. I had that noise for weeks, real annoying! but relief when gone!

he means that piece that sticks down on the hatch when you open it...it looks like a "U"...he's saying to wrap tape around the horizontal part of the "U"..if you still don't understand PM me and i'll try to help

-Jon-
P.S. - trunks are called "boots" in some other countries

it's not a "rattle." it's more like one or two taps. (tap - tap, tap. . _ ..) it actually comes from rear passanger side. i had someone else sit in the back seat with the hatch tray removed. the sound comes from underneath on the passanger side. what could it be?

I get a sort of squeaky sound when i drive on rough roads for a while. I suspected that it was something to do with the suspension so i had it checked out. I have lowered my car with 50ml King springs but have not changed the shocks. The guy at the suspension place said it could be the rubber thingee (i forget what its called at the momement) on the top of the shock and the metal from the shock has poked through a bit and is rubbing on something. He said its not a big deal and is not dangerous- although it can get really annoying. My remedy is just to turn the BASS up! Have you lowered your car and not changed the shocks? If so, that could be your problem.

i found out what it was. it was the hatch after all. i adjusted the stupid rubber stops so that they're longer (about 1 1/2 turns) and now it's gone. the noise is gone but it's a ***** to shut and open the hatch. i guess i'll have to put another shimmy between the hatch and the striker, a.k.a. "boot lock." the hatch and the rear quarter panels are now even. (funny how i never noticed that the hatch was lower than the rest of the panels in the back when closed) this was the first thing i tried. apparently, i didn't make the rubber stops long enough. i feel like such an ass... thanks everyone. and i apologize to everyone for saying that it wasn't the hatch. sorry... now i can sleep easy tonight.... lol
