i did a search on this and read alot of posts, but i am still kinda confused about this...

if i were to put a turbo on a motor with 170k+ miles on it, what precautions would i have to take beforehand to make sure i dont blow my motor?

Well I wouldn't recomend it. Either rebuild your engine, or you would need it very soon. Then just search for what needs to be built up to run boost. It all depends how much you want to run too. Resleeve, new pistons, rods, are part of rebuilding. Also may want to get new cams that work with turbo better. But im sure someone else can further explain.

And if you do turbo it with 170k miles TUNE IT asap.
