I bought a 96 GS-R from my aunt for my first car. I need to rebuild the engine, because he treated it horribly. Do you guys have any suggestions for products, parts, ect. that I might need? Thanks.

Stock. Rebuild it to stock unless you want to turbo it.

are you sure it needs a rebuild? If so, why?

It definitely needs a rebuild. My uncle kept putting in the wrong fuel type and he didn't take care of it that well. It runs, but it burns oil. I might turbo it, but that would come much farther down the line.

If that is your true intention, just send the block out now for sleeves and forged internals. 4-5k. Refresh the head for 1k. And be ready when it’s time. Car will still be drivable until you turbo.
