I was reading an article in Honda Tuning Mag where they were swapping a b16a into a second gen Teg. They said the motor they got was from an Automatic trans and it had less HP. I believe they said 127 -or so- Horse power. (I’ll check the article when I get home). Anyways, after a bunch of modding, they only got it into the 140HP range. How lame is that?

Whats that all about? Anyone know anything about there being an auto version and a manual version b16a? I assume mine is manual since they can be purchased with manual transmissions on them. I didnt get the trans however. Is there a way to tell if its an ATX or MTX engine?
Thanks guys

There shouldn't be any difference in the motors that come from and AT car vs a MT car. The transmissions and the computers are different.

Okay, I scanned the article so you guys can read it. (These are large 2 meg files so be patient)
I believe there was a 3rd page but you'll get the idea. I marked the spot where they mention the horsepower diff between auto and manual.
Honda Tuning article-CLick Me

So whats the deal? is there a way to tell if you have an engine from an auto or manual? Wierd

*edit* Plus they only end up getting 140 hp out of it in the end after $1,700 worth of upgrades . Thats pretty lame considering it should have started off w./ 160. I mean, I assume you a little hp at the wheels but still...140 from a b16a with throttle body, cams and adjustable gears. I hope mines not an automatic b16

Motor wise, they should have no different... if they dynoed the automatic teg, then of course they will get less HP on the dyno sheet, the power is lost to the transmission... then after the swap the engine into an manual teg, and they run the dyno again, of course they will see some gain. :p

a lost of 12HP between auto and manual looks reasnoable.

Okay but in the article they state: "we later found out the engine we tested was an automatic model, which incorporated a smaller camshaft, thereby lowering overall horsepower output." They say initially it dyno'd at 133.2 hp. Thats dyno'd in their 5 speed LS. Not the original Japanese car the engine came from. The link to the article is there. Check it out. It blew me away. I never knew there was a difference.

looks like this guy says the same thing:

"bambam89lx

Be Careful because Osakajdmmotors.com sells these when u order a JDM B16A. Be careful u don't get a automatic one also that they just bolted a 5 spd on cuz the cams are weaker."

I actually saw a B16a Auto, with the cams out and a b16a manual, the cams are slightly differant.
I know nothing about degrees or how to measure, but my thought is they are not as aggressive
