Hello everyone, last weekend I was out in Hemet Ca, coming back from Saboba Casino in my integra at about 11:00 pm. So i notice this car speeding up fast behind me, starts tail gating me, so i speed up a bit and was turning on a side street , thats when the patrol car flipped on his lights.. Long story short, he pops my hood, and all i got at this point is just a cheap ebay intake, stock everything else except my jdm nonvtec b20, ive been to a ref before with the jdm b20 and passed. Another patrol car rolls up and begins to use my car to teach the other officers whtas legal and whatnot, they try to tell me any Japanese engine is illegal, which is wrong, on the carb website it specifies that jap "replacement" engines are legal in CA, i know the b20 has some grey area but the ref i took it to in the past told me that it was good, that its the same engine just with a bigger piston, no problems...ANyways, after the second patrol vehicle left, the CHP officer was kinda cool, told me that was his boss, that the only reason they are out and working over time is to write out modified emissions tickets, that on any other day it might of been different and he didnt give me a speeding ticket for going 8 miles over the limit, but I do have to go to the ref..... Anyways, i aint stressed, im going back to the same ref station on the same time and weekday when i went a couple months ago... Just felt like venting and to give a heads up to anybody else with a cheap ebay intake...Looks like im going to have to get my comptech cold air box sooner then i though.=)

you should just keep the stock intake on until you get your Injen SRI or something carb legal. Not worth the risk to me for a 5 hp, now your stuck wasting your time going down to the ref

I don't get how the b20 passed the state ref though. To my understanding, the b20 motor is illegal to swap into a passenger car because it came out of an SUV.

Regardless, i'd take the time to get a carb sticker for the intake. Just email AEM or whoever, tell them you bought an intake and the sticker got lost or something.
It's definitely a waste of time and money (10 dollars and possibly a fine too)...

that's just too funny!! who told you that??...i have a B20 as well and neither the State Ref nor the Smog said that was illegal...it's the same motor for both vehicles...just a bigger displacement from a 1.8 to a 2.0...

I know what a b20 is, it's just the fact it came out of a CRV which constitutes it as a SUV motor. Oh well, if it passes smog, that's a good thing for people with b20's then.

Yeah, definitely not worth it... last time i had a header, exhaust, the whole nine yards... I thought if i had to pop my hood i might slide by with just an intake.. Got my appointment set for tomorrow, retard my timing, put my power steering belt back on for less hassle on the techs. Does anybody know though that when I do pass, do I have to wait till the ticket enters thier system in 20 days and pay up and then am i legal to drive again or can I pass and drive around with my papers saying i passed cause technically i am "under compliance" and then pay up in 20 days??

Update. Passed the ref no problems, called the courts, called the ref 800 number, called the CHP, they all gave me the run around about if i can now drive, the court said it would take 40 days to get into thier system. Im driving it though, printed info from CARB regarding japanese engines, from the DMV vehiivle code regarding the section my citation pertrains to that basically states the car can only be driven to a shop, or home unit it is in code, does not specify days restricted, also have the BAR certifcate from the ref , hopefully if i get pulled over, i got all my bases covered and the cop wont take away my ride, hopefully.

You have the right to drive even with the ticket so don't worry about that. What takes the time is for the info to get put into thier system and clear the ticket so later on down the road they don't add on fines. Also more then likely they still make you pay a small fine even though you passed. I think it was 20 bucks for me in central CA
