Okay..I have decided I need to get a radar detector...I got pulled over doing 131 in a 80 zone last night....thank god it was a cop I know...and he let me off with a warning...but my question besides that is..what is the best detector..or a decent one that works well and doesn't cost over...200 bucks?

I just got a V1 and it's great. $400, but the most advanced detector available. I'd say either go all out and get a V1 or just get a cheap one; no point in paying a lot for a middle-of-the-line detector. I previously had a Cobra ESD-9100 and it worked well, but it was hard to tell what is or isn't a false alarm and it's "City Mode" could sometimes allow an X-band gun to clock you without the detector making any noise. It wasn't a bad little detector, but the V1 definately blows it out of the water.

Passport 8500 350 - 250 used 300 new on Ebay
Bel 980 330 - 160 used 190 new on Ebay

All three are supposed to be solid detectors with each one winning a different comparison test.

I bet that 131 in a 80 zone is km/hr.

Now that I have a V1, I wouldn't even think about going back to a less advanced detector... All they do is beep; you don't know where or how many signals. The V1's bogey counter and locator are very useful, especially on a sensitive detector. It's laser coverage is supposed to be the best around too. It definately saved me from a laser trap just one day after I got it. I know people who have been clocked with laser and their radar/laser detector didn't even go off, but my V1 went off when the car in front of me got clocked, and I slowed down in time. I looked around but couldn't see the cop, so I U-turned after a minute and went back to see if maybe it was somehow a false alarm. Just after I turned around, I see a cop in the process of pulling someone over in the exact spot that I just went through. I went back a few hours later and found the cop hiding there in the dark.

It's not the most user friendly detector, but it's certainly the most advanced and it's detection range is very close to, if not better than, the other high-end detectors. It's expensive, but worth it.

this is a funny debate because people say the v1 is the best but ive also read a lot of pages saying the escort is better i have a feeling i can get the escort for about 200 so thats what im gonna do 400 is too much money for a product that needs to be updated so frequently

Some tests show the Escort having a slightly better radar detection range, but the V1 is still up there. And like I said before, the bogey counter/location features are very helpful; no other detector has that. I researched quite a bit before I spent my $400, but I bought the V1 and am glad I did.

When you get a detector, you'll find that most of the time it goes off, it's a false alarm. But, what if there's a speed trap in an area where there's also a false alarm? A regular detector would just beep more than normal around that spot, but sometimes false alarms have a strong signal, so it may normally show full strength anyways. Maybe you'll get lucky and the cop's radar will be on a different band than the false alarm, and you're detector will show that. But, a V1 will tell you about the extra signal, which band it's on, and where it's coming from.

I have the V1 and I like it a lot. The only problem is that it is expensive and you have to always send it back to get an updated version. I like knowing how many signals are hitting me and from where they are coming from. The problem with all these radar detectors is that they can't help you when the cop pulses or instant on's you at night.
