Ok. After much discussion and learning ive come to realize that I either have:
A B16 tranny case with LS internals
or
A B16 tranny with a different Final Drive gear.
So my question is, If you have a B16 tranny would putting a LS final drive in it make it close to an LS tranny? I know that all of the B-Series trans. have close gearing (as shown below) so im trying to end up with a shorter geared tanny than my old GSR trans.

S80/Y80 (USDM B18B1)
1st 3.230
2nd 1.900
3rd 1.269
4th 0.966
5th 0.714
FD 4.266

Y80 (USDM B18C1)
1st 3.230
2nd 1.900
3rd 1.360
4th 1.034
5th 0.7878
FD 4.400

S80 (JDM B18C w/Helical LSD)
1st 3.230
2nd 2.105
3rd 1.458
4th 1.034
5th 0.787
FD 4.785

S80 (USDM B18C5 W/LSD)
1st 3.230
2nd 2.105
3rd 1.458
4th 1.107
5th 0.848
FD 4.400

And below you will see the rpm reading each tranny should show and a set speed (mph) minus the JDM GSR LSD

B16 (Y21,S21,S4C) -
3rd gear @ 50 mph = 4672 rpm
5th gear @ 50 mph = 2717 rpm

GSR (S80,Y80) -
3rd gear @ 50 mph = 4358 rpm
5th gear @ 50 mph = 2522 rpm

LS (S80) -
3rd gear @ 50 mph = 3942
5th gear @ 50 mph = 2218

I did have a GSR trans in my GSR before this and it seemed to rev better and pull more than this B16.
Thank you. -cam

So I must not have been paying attention when I read this thread the first time.

I thought about this thread before I left work today so I checked the info you posted and knew it wasn't right as soon as I reread it. I checked anyway on the way home and 60mph in 4th puts me at 4400.

60 mph in 4th = 3500rpm....... so this is not normal?

Maybe they put in a different final drive? I'll admit my experience with the various options is limited at this point but mines a regular b16 and yours is not matching that.

Thats what im thinking too and there is no way im going to downgrade from my gsr trans. Maybe when i get the lsd gsr together i will switch em back again, as soon as i drove it i knew it wasnt reving high enough but if we put this one in the turbo car we might be able to drive on the highway out of boost.

I'd be more concerned with making sure it's actually a b16 tranny...

after reading this. driving to work last night, my gsr tranny 4 gear @ 60mph, rpm is around 4000 so i'm guessing you might have different gearing or it's just a LS tranny. found this on a web site. try that method and see how close your rpm/mph to this. good luck.

I tested. rpms match that of a LS trans.......not happy....... so is it possible to switch final drive gears and get the results of a LS out of a B16?

...instead of wasting time and money doing that get your money back from the person that sold it to you. Then buy the real thing.

Well it came from craigslist and i accidently deleted his number only days before finding out it was f'd in the a.
Im starting to understand everything, now i just need somebody that knows how to use the calcs help me figure out if i have LS internals or B16 with a different FD gear, bc i will just put another FD gear on it if thats all it is.

Changing only the final drive would make a b16 more sluggish, but it would not post numbers identical to an LS. The only way that happens is if someone put an LS trans in a b16 case.
I know, thats why im wondering if thats in fact what I have.
I will post the rpms for the different trannys in my first post also, bc it wasnt exact even given the 100-200 rpms that the stock tach can be off.

OK...so, in one post, you say that the numbers matched the LS. Now you're saying they don't. So which is it?!

You say you suspect the FD. Take the RPM number from the b16, divide by the b16 FD, then multiply by the LS FD. If they match, then it is just the FD. If not, keep plugging numbers.

check the TI Calculator.
punch in the ls final drive and gears and print that out. nobody is going to bother putting in a b16 fd with ls gearing...
so with that being said, drive around and check ALL ur gears. if they all match up then u indeed have an ls trans.
if one gear is off u can punch numbers in and find out which gear whatever it is u have off. take it back if u can, u got scammed.
