i just read the article on advancing the timing and was wondering what adverse affects i could look for if i did this(i.e. rough idle or somthing like that), also wondering how much this could help 1/4 mile wise.

too much spark advance results in higher cylinder pressures which in turn results in higher temperatures and more work for your bearings and rings to overcome...so higher temps & cylinder pressure are things that increase the risk of detonation. Secondly you wear out your engine faster.

the tradeoff is 2-3 more whp for the chance to blow up or wear out things faster...you decide if it's worth pushing past the stock max. of 18 degrees BTDC.

yup, that article opened my eyes to the risks of timing advance.

MD, if you had a new motor with 2200 miles on it running 16BTDC from new to this point, when would you consider going to 18?
