Site tips and tricks: Creating a table of contents for running log

Had a member approach me about this a month ago and today had another ask about how does one go about creating a table of contents (ToC) on their running log. Allow me to use this thread to show you how !

Here are a two examples of a ToC in a running log:
- My GSR's running log
- drmix's running log

So if you'd like to index your running log (I find it useful for reference as I've gone back in my thread to find part numbers and what not) this is how you do it.

Step 1) Get link to post

On the post you wish to add to the ToC, go to the top right of *just that post* to where it says "permalink", right click on it and choose "Copy Link Address" (screen shot if from Google Chrome, other browsers may have different wording but you'll get the gist)

Step 2) Edit first post of thread

Go to the first post of your thread and click the "Edit" button at the bottom right, the post will turn into a text entry box.

Step 3) Enter the ToC entry text

So here you can see that I enter "2015-06-09: Assessment of oil pump seal gone bad" and then, very important, use the mouse to highlight the text I want to be a link

Step 4) Relate the click url to the text

While the text is highlighted, click this button:

and in the dialog box you are presented with, paste (right click mouse -> paste *or* control-v on a Windows keyboard *or* Command-v on a Mac) the URL that is sitting in your clipboard into the box and click "OK"

Results)

Here is all the forum code that makes up the new "entry", click the "Save" button on bottom right

And here is what other people will see !

Feel free to ask any questions, if you need help, please link me back to (1) your running log post and (2) what post you are trying to add... also feel free to add a link to your running log here in this thread !

Unfortunately it doesn't work if like me, you change your thread title to give a pointer to the latest issue and what page it's on. Title changes also change the URL, which breaks index pages.

95 EJ1 Milano RIP/died/sold -> 98 DB7 CSM RIP/totalled -> 97 DB7 CSM Awful. Sold it back. -> 01 DB8 YR525M RIP/totalled -> 06 Civic LX daily -> 1991 CRX HF (YT)

it does work with different/changed titles

example, all three of these go to the same place... so whatever the "permalink" URL is, it will work forever

the pattern is: /forum/forum_id-forum_name/thread_id-title-a-page_number.html#postpost_id

Just mouse over those links and look in your browser status bar to see that all three titles are all different (and all go to the same place)

Interesting. I've done it twice, and both times, it's broken the links hard when I changed the title.

Thanks. Now I need to work on my running log. It's been a long journey of ups and downs. But in the end, always smiles for miles.

What is showing for you? Also, what browser and device are you using?

Thanks!

The links were dead when I did it. I use Chrome (various versions in 2014/15) and various OSs (Win7, 7x64, MacOS 10.x) with Ghostry to block most trackers. TI is mostly unblocked.

I'll try it again when I have a little more free time.
