97 GSR ABS issue

I am having an intermittent ABS light- it NEVER lights WHILE driving, but only on startup. 3 or 4 starts and it will go out and stay out for a few days, and then reappear on startup. My neighbor is a service tech for ford, and a very sharp young man. His code reader would not read this car, so we (he)jumpers a connector under the glovebox while I read the flashes ( which flash really fast!) and came up with code 8-1. He suggested taking it to a Honda dealer for diagnosis. does anyone know what the correct Honda diagnostic tool is for this, and is there another route for diagnosis less expensive then the Honda dealer?

A little searching would have brought you back here:

81 is an ABS function error. ABS computer or pump is the usual culprit.
