Tach freezes at 2700 RPM

Don't know if I'm in the right forum, but I'll try. Everything working fine, however, this evening I noticed my tachometer did not move beyond 2700 rpm. At 80 mph. (highway cruising speed) it always registered 3200. Several times it registered at 2700 when the speed dropped beneath 40 mph...hard to believe. Appreciate any help I can get. I'm clueless on this one. Thanks

Does the speedometer needle bounce erratically up and down? If so, it is likely your VSS.

Nope. The speedometer works fine, but the tachometer stops at 2700 and sometimes does not immediately drop back as I diminish speed. Nonetheless, the car idles at about 750 rpm. So, the tach works at low rpm

I've already asked this question some time ago and gotten 1 response, so I'll ask it another way before I buy unnecessary replacement OEM parts. Here's the question: Is it the ignition coil or the ignitor that controls the tachometer? I appreciate anyone's experienced opinion. The car is a stock 1998 GS, B18B1 engines (now with a "classic" auto plate--don't drive it much 'cept in summer.) Thanks
