For some reason no one ever thinks to put the LS final drive into a b16 transmission. Doing this puts the gearing right between the b16 and GSR. A LS final drive can be sourced really cheap, and it can be easily installed while swapping to a Limited Slip Differential. Everything goes together fine with this.

Now that's a good idea. Then you can have the close ratio's of the B16/ITR, but a lower RPM in top gear for the highway. Sure you wont eat though each gear as fast and acceleration in each gear wont be quite as good but then again you can only rev to 6,800 RPM. At least for the GSR and ITR they can rev high enough to get decent speed out of each gear. I have an ITR transmission in my GS-R and I'm glad I can rev to 8,100 rpm. I would imagine it would kind of suck to have the ITR gearing in a motor that redlines at 6,800rpm. At least with a higher final drive, you can stay in each gear a little longer, and be at a slightly lower rpm for a given speed in a given gear.

Edit. I played with the gear ratio calculator and the difference between a 4.2 and a 4.4 final drive doesn't make much difference.

It's something like this:
LS's 5th with 4.26= 80mph at 3,500rpm
GS-R's 5th with 4.4= 70mph at 3,500rpm
ITR's 5th with 4.26= 68mph at 3,500rpm
ITR's 5th with 4.4= 65mph at 3,500rpm

I have a GS-R. It has VTEC!

^Why are you talking about only revving to 6800? I was talking about this transmission on any car with VTEC. My car revs to 9500 and I've done this with a stock LS trans before. This setup will work really well on high powered turbo cars too. A b16's gearing is too short and you spin through 3rd gear, and some believe a GSR is slightly too long. This is a simple allternative.

hey guys not trying to thread jack but this is the frankenstein trans thread

i was thinking about doing a trans for my dirt track car and i was wondering if anyone has ever used an LS 2nd gear and a b16 3rd gear to have really close ratios....my reasoning behind this

i have used both trannys on the dirt track and with the LS trans 2nd was great because i could get it to hook coming out of the corner and it was right at 5500 making good power , i would shift about halfway down the straight but 3rd was too long to make any power

so i tried a b16 trans and it was the opposite ...2nd was useless because it would just spin tires and i would be topping out going thru the corner ,but 3rd could get me all the way to the end of the straightaway right at 7k or so ...so i was just running 3rd all the way around the track and it worked great

just trying to get the best of both

The LS 2nd and GSR 2nd both have the same gear ratio, and the GSR 2nd uses a superior dual cone synchro design.

So yes, you could swap in one of the two to use with the B16 3rd (as long as they are all the large diameter, 26mm 92-01 parts), but you might have a slightly funny rpm upshift landing point, especially if this is on an LS engine. This is where you need to build a thrust chart to see just how much gap there would be between gears.

95DC2GS-R: Why on earth would you downgrade to a G2?

thanks for the info kasey ...it would def be all 92+ parts ...

i would be using a YS1 case and i guess adding the b16 3rd to that

i know it would not be much of a drop between 2nd and 3rd but thats what i want
i think shifting at 6500-7000 it would drop about 1200-1500 rpms keeping me right about 5200-5500 right in the powerband not dropping off like the ls 3rd

you think maybe a GSR 3rd instead?

If you're starting off with a LS cable gear set as your base, then the B16 3rd paired with the LS final drive will only be slightly shorter than a straight GSR 3rd (paired with GSR 4.4 FD (I really do love the straight GSR setup with boost)), which would be just fine, especially if this is a dedicated race car. I would go ahead and use the B16 4th and 5th as well, as long as you still keep the LS 4.266 FD. I found the LS 3rd and 4th to be way too sluggish acceleration wise, but it's up to you whether you keep 5th long or short. Better freeway driving and a higher top speed at the cost of thrust gap, versus a higher rate of acceleration and a perfect thrust gap with high rpm freeway driving.

well 4th and 5th dont matter at all.... i will never get this car above 3rd gear in a race ....its a 3/8 mile dirt oval and i was just topping out 3rd with the b16 trans

so i think i want to do the following

ys1 cable clutch case
GSR 4.40 final drive
GSR hydro 1st and 2nd
b16 hydro 3rd 4th and 5th

just to get the slightly longer 2nd to a closer ratio 3rd ....less rpm drop to make it pull harder to the end of the straight
