So I'm troubleshooting some things in my car and timing was on the list, but when I went to check the timing the marks weren't visible with the timing light. I did a search on this but that guy had his timing light on the wrong wire. I'm trying to get this figured out because my car misses and runs like crap when its cold and isn't the best heated up either

Your light were flashing right?
I think you need to clamp it to the left most spark plug wire (or the right most, forgot which one).
If you clamp on to the wrong wire it shouldn't even flash (at least mine wouldn't)

If you check the Helms manual, it should tell you where exactly is the mark... is kind a hard to describe with words... but if your timing light is pointing to the crank pulley, you should be able to see it, is at the edge of the pulley right beside the timing belt area.. it has a white mark, but on a 91 RS, it would mostly likely be rusted lol...

my complete running log! JDM, HID, and more! ^^

well rusted is what I thought too so I crawled under the car this morning, found the grooves and marked them with white paint so that there would be no guessing at all. I'm thinking it should be clamped as close to the plug as possible necuase the closer it goes to the diistributor the light acts as its picking up the signal from the other wires. I do have it clamped on cylinder one and I'm aiming the light right at the TDC marker on the timing belt cover, I also made sure to place the jumper in the timing plug in the passengers kick panel

inductive timing lights need to be on cyl 1.

Meltman:We here at TI all appreciate you trashing a perfectly good ITR engine because you're dumb.

Forced induction is NOT a fix for bad VE

Are you placing a jumper on the service connector to prevent the computer from adjusting the ignition timing? The engine must be fully warmed up and have electrical loads such as AC and headlights off. Also it may be that your timing is currently so far off that you're not seeing where the marks are. Have someone rotate the distributor as you watch for the timing marks with the timing light.

have you tried changing the plugs and wires or even the distributor cap and rotor button, because if any one of those are bad it can cause a miss no matter what you do to the timing.

B is for best, therefore B is better than K anyday!

Distributor and plugs are new, i'm pretty sure the wires are too... update:: I did the drop cylinder test and cylinder four made very little difference at all. I pulled the plugs and they were all black soot.

does your timing light have an advance dial on it? if it does, you can turn it back and forth and it will help you fnd the mark. having the advanced dial on the timing light it extremely helpful

nope, no dial to monkey with... still just scratching my head here. The only thing that would make any kind of sense to me is that when the previous owner changed the timing belt they may have put the crank pulley on wrong

since cylinder four had almost no effect it could mean that wire is bad or plug is going bad or the injector for that cylinder isnt spraying properly
