There seems to be some confusion on people as to exactly how to search. Many members are posting in their threads that they tried to search, but couldn't find anything. This means two possibilities:
1) They are full of sh*t.
2) They don't actually know how to search.
I can relate to problem number two. There is so much real info on this site that sometimes it is hard to find the bit you are looking for. Another problem is that there are quite a few threads that are mistitled, locked, or just off topic and sometimes it is hard to find relevant information.
Now I am kind of clueless as to the programming side of searching, so maybe someone can jump in and offer some advice on that side (for example, using the '-' key to prevent showing topics associated with that word) but I will offer some of my own ideas on searching.
To begin with, I hope we all know where the search button is. To the left of every single screen on the whole website except the front page. Now notice there are three items associated with the search function. The tect box, where you enter the topic you are looking for, the drop down menu which shows where you want to look, and finally the execution button, which is the flashing "Search" icon.
If you are looking for info on a general topic, and you haven't found it in the articles or common topics, then enter as exact a phrase as you can in the textbox. For example, if I want to know about the downside to flywheels, I would enter 'flywheel problems.' No decent hits? Broaden the search to include any text entered in the thread by choosing 'Forum Body' in the drop down menu. You can also broaden the search by just entering 'flywheel.' This will turn up tons of results though, so you are much better off starting with a limited search and then including more topics.
Searching under forum body also helps you to find specific pieces of information you remember but can't recall exactly. It will turn up many more hits than searching under forum topics, but if you need obscure info, or exact phrases, it is the way to go.
Remember that most threads are started by a question, not information. So searching for 'cons to higher octane' is less likely to give you a result as 'is higher octane better?'.
Please, please, please, please, please make this site better by searching for what you need instead of starting a new thread immediately. Chances are, it is already in the common topics or the articles. Either way, you will most likely learn enough to draw your own conclusions by reading both of them. I can tell you from personal experience that if you read all the articles and common topics on the site, and actually take enough time to absorb them, then you will be ahead of 90% of the people out there.
Finally, if anyone has more advice on how to search, feel free to post it here.

i think people do search it is just that they just do not take the time to think of other words that could be used like "remove" or "take out", "change" or "replace". stupid stuff like that.

I think some people just need to take a little more time when searching. You have to re-arrange words, leave some out, add some, or just the key word and do some leg work. If 3 pages come up then GO through them all.
I use the common topics first, then articles, then the previous threads. There has not been one thing I have wondered about and not found on this site already.
Just try different methods w/the search feature, and be sure to search "forum body" as well.

When I search I usually check out the threads with a lot of replies. Those will most likely have the info you need.

I have another tip for narrowing down the searching.
Lets say for exmaple, we are searching for information about how aftermarket light weight flywheels help performance. When entering in the keyword "flywheel" using Forum Topics, hits will come back from all forums topics (TI pit, gen3, performace, buy/sell/trade etc). This will sometimes work against you when you are searching for something more specific. Of course you could always add/subtract words from your search but sometimes it can be more helpful if you go to the advanced searching page and from the drop down menu, target it to search only the Performance forum.
Now then when you conduct your search, you won't get useless threads from people trying to sell flywheels in the buy/sell/trade section or whatever else is out there which is unhelpful.

In addition to the searching, when members are bored:
browse each forum and go to the very last page and 5-10 pages prior to that. You will see posts from 2002 (after the server crash) and the questions that are asked today are all there... Yup, they have been answered before, picked apart, disected, and every aspect of the topic ripped apart. That's why you see members from 2002 and prior getting kind of anal when they spot one of these posts. It's also a good way to see how TI has progressed. Also you gain more knowlege and you won't have to search since it'll be in your head. this Saves a lot of CPU processing on the server.
If you see something interesting... do what I do: Bookmark it!

I'll also chime in with a tip. This has helped me on search engines for years and even on eBay.
Start your search with a more general term and narrow it down with repeated searches. Add a word on each time to get more and more specific.
Example: you're looking for a thread on what speakers will bolt right into your Integra with no modification. If you start with something way too specific like "speakers that will fit in my doors", you probably won't see anything. A better route to take might be:
1. speaker replace
2. speaker replace direct
3. speaker replace direct door
You might've also noticed that I LEFT OUT small words like a, in, the, etc. Including those words will almost always give you zero results. Put in key descriptors, leave the unnecessary words out.
Also, note how I selected the word "speaker" instead of "speakerS" and "replace" instead of "replaceMENT". Not putting an S on the end can be the difference between finding the right thread and getting no results. If the thread you need to read has "speakerS" in it, then "speaker" will point to that thread. But if the thread is "speaker" (without the second S), and you enter "speakerS", you'll get nothing.
Cliffs Notes:
-start general, move to specific
-do not expect your first search to give the EXACT thread you need
-leave out unnecessary words
-leave out unnecessary letters
