So I buy a set of rims from a guy locally. He said they were originally white, but sprayed over with black. I inspected each rim front and back and everything looked good. I recently started working on them; first thing was to strip the nasty paint off. After the first application of aircraft remover it was evident there was more then just 2 coats of paint...there was 4 coats actually. So after I get down to the last remaining coat I notice a crack on the back side of one rim. It must of not been visible when I checked them out because of all those layers of paint covering it up. Anyways, just wondering if this rim is salvageable and if it can be *fixed* by welding it shut?

I'd call that wheel toast. No way I'd drive on it, even after it was welded.

Maybe someone who knows more about welding cast wheels could chime in.

EDIT-looking back at the pics, that's a huge crack. It's damn near through half the wheel!

There is no cure. Only temporary relief.

yeah its repairable, but i would only take it a wheel repair shop, dont know if you have one around you , but around here the local guy gets around 100 bucks to fix a wheel, but for that kinda money you could probably find a lone wheel and replace it with it

yea I live if central OH and there is a place around here called wheel medic. They could probably fix that without a problem, but for the cost you might as well purchase a new one.

Rota's are cheap to buy you can buy a whole set or a new one for cheaper than it would to fix it and there is not guarantee that the rim will be legitimately able to drive on. I would just say buy a new one dont waste your time trying to fix it.

honestly I wouldnt even bother. One of my rims cracked like that.A guy told me 100 something to fix it.IMO for like 30 bucks more from JBL motorsports you can get a brand new one.thats what I did. Also you have piece of mind that you're rolling around on a brand new rim.

Not worth it, buy new rota and either hang the cracked one on your garage or something.
