I'm getting my dc2 painted and was wondering afterwards I was not going to drive it for a couple weeks and let it soak up the sun to cure. But after a month I was told I can wash, detail, and wax. Now from reading through the archives I was wondering do I have this right, I wash the car, clay bar it, detail it, then wax it. I'm planning on buying a buffer too. Thanks. I was also going to use that turtle wax black since my car is being painted black. Insights/ comments welcom. thanks.

All you need is a nice sealer wax, unless your new paint job has runs, orange peel, etc. then it needs to be color sanded and buffed, but they should do that if its needed. There is no reason for a clay bar, that is for fallout, that will gather on the paint over time.

I've been hearing good things about porter cables, what's the difference between that and a orbital buffer?

Do NOT use that turtle wax stuff, I know exactly what you are talking about. It doesn't work, at all. Look through the detailing section here. Particularly this one. Lots of great info about quality products.

As far as what to choose, I have only heard good things about PC's on here. They seem sot be great for beginners such as yourself. I personally learned on/ use full high speed buffer, but it's tricky, and I have still not perfected using it yet. So I would advise the PC.

well I'm leaning towards the pc but what can the pc do that the cheap walmart orbiter can't do they both rotate and polish right? Pretty much I want to be convinced a little more to buy an expensive polisher.

Porter Cable is just a company who makes random orbital buffers. Theirs are pretty sturdy and adjustable, but you pay out the ass for it.

Unless your car has a lot of overspray or sloppy paint work, claying isn't really necessary. I would definitely get a sealant on the paint so that it doesn't fade as quickly.

Is it safe to seal after it's been painted though? So I shouldn't invest in a pc at this time? I just want to be able to remove swirl marks when I get them and make waxing a little easier instead of by hand too.

I would definitely tell you to get a random orbital buffer. I don't know enough about your paint and the process to tell you when you can/can't seal. When in doubt, wait it out...I'd say give it 90 days from when you finished painting.

PC's can also spin faster i believe?? I also have an old 9" random orbital, it doesn't seem to go fast enough to polish very well. I am sure there is a thread on here that further describes the differences between the 2. If I were you I would do a little more research before I went out and bought something.

PC = Integra
Walmart Orbital = Geo Prisim

There is no comparison. The cheap orbitals work ok be applying wax and removing it but they do nothing for buffing.

Like others have said if the paint job is done right you should not need to do any buffing right now. But the PC is a good investement that will come in handy.

I couldn't disagree MORE! Buying one of those things, IMO, is just a WASTE of your hard-earned $$! That machine will do NOTHING for correcting flaws in your paint (REMOVING swirls and light scratches).

Let me say this: If you want to be able to keep your paint looking the best it can possibly look, BUY THE PORTER CABLE!!! It's been the best $$ I've spent for maintaining the paint on my car. Take the extra leap and buy the EDGE pads. They're like having 2 pads in 1.

If you're looking to take the leap into actually DETAILING your car, hop over to DetailCity and Autopia and read up. Like many of you, I cut my teeth on the articles on TI for detailing...but DC and Autopia are where you'll learn more.

This is a fairly expensive investment. You're talking about $250 for your polisher and pads. But....how much did you just spend on that paint job?

Also, if you really get bitten by the bug, you can detail your friends'/family's cars to make some of that $$ back on your investment. Check out THIS PACKAGE. That would have everything you need except your polishes. I'm assuming you already have sealants.

You will learn that keeping your paint in tip-top shape is NOT about the products (like sealants, etc) you use. It's about the PROCESS...and the PC is INTEGRAL to the process!

Don't ya just hate it when little things pop up and get in your way of improving your Teg? I mean those things that just seem to pop up from time to time. You know......LITTLE things like RENT.

Gotta hate that...........

I have been reading on autopia all day but they didn't say what the proper way for using it was, any insights in that area? Also most places don't sell the backing plate and all the pads for it and I would have to order online which kinda sucks. I always thought those wallmart buffers buff the wax that's on your car that's why I wanted it but the porter cable can also buff and polish without damage? What can the porter cable do that I can't do by hand?

Polish! Most polishes start out with a larger grit and break down as you work them. The action of the PC produces heat as you work the polish, causing the grit to break down. Most polishes don't really break down correctly when you work them by hand. I wouldn't even TRY to polish a car by hand. Waxing, yeah....but not polishing.

I wouldn't buy a backing plate. Go with the Edge pads. They will allow you to quickly switch between pads and give you 2 surfaces with which to polish...and there's no backing plate to worry about hitting the painted surface.

As for the vendors being online...yeah...kinda sux. Most of them ship quickly, so it's not a HUGE issue. You just have to keep an eye on your product and order when you get low.

Check out This Article on how to use the PC.
