stealthpenguin's 1994 Thunder Grey Metallic LS
Purchased mileage: 86,8xx mi.
Current mileage: 92,xxx mi.
I update this thread with all the goings-ons of my car. Thanks for looking!
Positive/negative feedback is welcome.
Running log:
1/18: Maintenance
Small update on this weekend's repairs
Fixed/replaced so far:
- Kumho Ecsta LX Platnium tires (195/60/14)
- Generic battery
- Oil pan gasket
- P/S pump
- Distributor
- Gas gauge
- Hatch struts
- Windshield trim
- Thermostat
- Synthetic oil change
- Bosch oil filter
- Generic paper air filter
- Generic p/s fluid
- Generic coolant
- Kenwood door speakers
- Antenna
Still needs to be fixed:
- Front driver and rear driver ABS wheel sensors
- Alarm (will be re-doing everything soon)
- Exhaust rattle
- Repair/paint rust spot
9/7: Security
Installed my first alarm and other security features. :)
8/2: Car purchased
My girlfriend is moving to CA at the end of August, and I wanted to buy a car on her behalf, so she'll something to drive when she arrives. I was looking on Craigslist for a couple weeks, trying to find a stock, low mileage LS/GS/RS.
I finally found a '94 LS coupe that looked very tempting:
Good:
- Original, female owner
- 87,000 miles
- Completely stock
- Mint black interior
- New timing belt at 50,000 miles (don't know why they replaced it so early...)
- No CEL or reliability issues
- My favorite color!!
Bad:
- ABS light goes on intermittently
- Rust on QP, some bubbling in rear wheel arches
- Broken windshield trim
- Clearcoat failure on roof/trunk/doors
- All undercarriage bolts are rusted
- Rear calipers rusted
- Mis-calibrated gas gauge (goes way beyond full, and is empty before it reaches empty)
- 10 year old tires
- 8 year old battery
- Antenna stuck up
After speaking with the owner, and learning about the fresh timing belt, and huge interest in the car, I decided to drive there as soon as possible. I left work early, and called in a HUGE favor from a friend to front me the money and drive me to the car. When I arrived, I could see that the car was completely unmolested, in great mechanical condition, and had only cosmetic problems. The rust issues were due to the car being on the east coast for 6 years, and had otherwise been a CA car, used only to commute from Palo Alto to Stanford (<2 miles). The car drove amazingly, no clutch slipping, perfect transmission and smooth idle. I tried my hardest to get them to negotiate on the price, citing everything I could see wrong with the car, but they were firm since 2 people had already looked at it that day, and one was coming the next day to have it inspected, and presumably buy it. So, I gave them asking price, and drove it away, feeling pretty good about my purchase.
So, here is my "new", $3000 LS:

Clearcoat failure:

Tow truck caused this damage:

Rust (lots of it):

UV cracking on old tires, also note rusted suspension arm:

Leaky powersteering pump. Issue?

8-year-old battery:

Dirty engine bay:

Minty interior:

Overall decent exterior:

Thanks for reading!

Yah, I pray that I never have to do any suspension work on this thing.

Sucks to see all of that rust and some old, old parts, but that gives you a lot of very easy improvements you can do to make a good car awesome.
What are you planning to do about the quarter panel rust?
|
You can't polish a turd, but you CAN clear-coat it!

Nothing for now.
Before the car is sold I will cut out the rusted body panels, then weld in new metal. Then primer, block it all down, and have it painted.

Update:
This weekend I installed my first alarm system. Let me just say, it was a PITA. However, it is very reassuring to know that any thieves will be very frustrated. I figure, what's the point of paying someone $200+ to install an alarm system it just mimics every other basic installation? The thief would know what to expect and there'd be no surprises... what's the fun in that?
However, there is one thing that bugs me, that I can't figure out:
- Door is open
- Arm the alarm
- Close the door
- Alarm is tripped
Not a big deal, but is pretty annoying nonetheless. On my car this doesn't happen, but the door trigger is setup the exact same way as far as I can tell...
I'll have another update this weekend with the car all spic-n-span.

Forgot to mention.
When I dismantled the interior of the car, I noticed that there was no sign of rust on the inside of the car where this rust spot is:

Does this mean that I could potentially sand down this area, apply a rust inhibitor, and respray without sacrificing too much long term durability?

I think you could salvage it. I would sand a full 1.5 inches around the rust spot to make sure you get all of the potential rust that could have gone under the paint out of there. I would get the rust inhibitor and apply some filler to cover up the divits the rust created. Then primer, then spray.
