98-01 Actuator Assembly Replacement

Well well, since I recently picked up a 1999 GSR I have been slowly attacking things that need to be fixed up or replaced. Today's task was replacing the always-troublesome rear hatch latch that plagues 98-01 hatchbacks, mainly that this door lock system only works when it wants to

So I decided to do something about it
First I had to find a new OEM actuator... ~ $60, not too bad, so I went ahead and placed the order and received it in a timely manor, so now to the installation!
Tools Needed:
- 10mm socket and rachet
- Something to pry with like a hook tool or small flathead screwdriver
- 15 mins
So here is the part I received ("ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY", Honda Part # 74840-ST7-A01)

Time to get it into my car. I start by removing the rear panel covering the actuator assembly. This is easily accomplished by removing the 7 pop fasteners that simply come out by pushing the middle in a little bit, then pry out the whole fastener... really simple
OK, now we have access to the part to replace, and its a piece of cake. First remove the (3) 10mm bolts shown, then disconnect the rod that attaches to the back of the outside keyhole. You'll see a little plastic collar holding the rod to the assembly, simply pry/pivot the collar off the rod, then detach the rod from the key assembly
(Note that the very top circle is shown in the next image)

Once you have the Key-area rod off and the (3) 10mms, simply move the assembly down a little bit to expose the rod that actually makes the latch move, its the same procedure as described above to disconnect the rod from the assembly

And I hate to make it as simple as this, but it really is this easy:
- Reverse steps to install new assembly! Done!!
Once installed, I tried unlocking and relocking and again and again and again and the latch worked flawlessly every time! One less hassle for me and my new Teg

How do you pop your hatch open if it doesn't want to open at all?Posted 01-16-2012 at 06:22 PM by SVBro

Try putting your key into the trunk key hole and turning to unlock (clockwise IIRC) and give it a little extra twist beyond the normal unlock. That may pop it open.Posted 07-12-2012 at 03:08 AM by dokesdc2
