When my GF bought her Altima, they put 'Emerald' on her registration. Nissan calls the color 'Brushed Pewter.' Everyone else calls it 'Brown.'

She went back to the DMV, registration in hand, and asked them to change it. The DMV clerk picked up her pen, crossed out 'Emerald,' and wrote in 'Brown.'

Since, the car has been pulled over 3 times. Not once did a cop ever comment on the handwritten reg. color.

Her insurance company is still under the impression the Altima is a lovely shade of green, I'd presume. *L*

You could always call your insurance company and ask on a 'What If' basis.

Red and yellow cars carry higher premiums, but I'm sure white and blue don't. So this shouldn't change your rate.

I've always personally wondered, if you painted a silver car red, for example, would that change your rate?

When you call, ask if color changes effect rates, specifically, would going from one color to another raise the premium, or could the change even lower it??

Another spur of the moment thought - I'd assume metallic blue costs more to spray than white, so if you didn't report the change, and had an accident, would they only want to pay up for what the white (what they insured) costs?

this is a little bit different than your situation.. you said the car is Brushed Pewter, and the DMV called it brown.. that is pretty much the same color IMO. He is going from White to Blue... But thats just my .02

First of all, this could be different in various states.

There is no harm in calling and finding out on your own. Call and ask if they would like to change the color on their records. If they don't, question answered, if they do, fine or harder to find stolen car saved.
