I agree! As my friends say I get to sleep with my love every night lol

I've been researching measurement tools and I'm going to invest in a nice set of micrometers as well as a dial bore gage or two. This wont be the last engine I build so I plan to make an investment in some good tools.

I'm looking at getting:

Mitutoyo part numbers: (Micrometers)
103-136
103-217
103-218

Mitutoyo part numbers: (Dial bore gages)
511-105
511-733

Has anyone used these before? From what I have been reading Mitutoyo or Starrett is the way to go.

Mike

We have good results with Starrett at the KCTCS machine shop. They're well outside the budget of a student, but if you can find some secondhand, they're great tools.

I'm glad to hear it! I just won a set of 3 Mitutoyo micrometers off of ebay for 38.50. That takes care of those, I'm going to purchase some gage blocks as well to make sure they are still calibrated. Now I'm on the hunt for some dial bore gages.

Plan this week is to take the last few components off the block and have a shop acid dip it for me to clean it up. I'm also going to work on getting the spec sheet for my pistons as I found out they are custom JE pistons.

After a lot of searching around I have finally peiced together a set of micrometers and standards.

Standards: 70.00
2-3" Mitutoyo micrometer (0.0001"): 16.00
3-4" Mitutoyo micrometer (0.0001"): 16.00
1-2" Brown and Sharpe micrometer (0.0001"): 16.00

I just checked them all and they are all calibrated and ready to go.

Now I'm on the hunt for two nice dial bore gages. Looking at Mitutoyo 1.4"-2.5" and a 2"-6". Hopefully that will be purchased soon.

Called a machine shop and got an estimate for hot tanking the block, the head, and doing a clean up hone on the cylinders for less than 100.00. I just need to pull the valves out of the head and strip the remaining parts off the block.

Wow, great deal on the mics and on the machine work! It looks like you're well on your way. Can't wait to see the parts flooding in.

I have similar markings on the cylinders on a used gsr block I bought. I'm not sure on the mileage of it. I tried to get my finger nail in them like you and I couldn't. I'm no machinist so I really don't know if that's of any value to you. Still I bet you could take it to a shop and ask what they have to say about it. It should be much lighter now.

+1 for keeping things organized

I had some engine parts in my room while I was in college, the only problem I had with it was that my room smelt like oil for a little while.
