I asked this once before but do not think an answer was given. DO you forsee any visability issues out the rear window? Withthe motor in place and the sheetmetal heat shield, do you think it will impair your rear visability at all?

there was a 3 to 4 page discussion about this a while back. look through the thread, there were some really creative names thrown out there.

Post #DC2H22-52

The M2Y4 to M2Z4 conversion is complete. This transmission was in excellent condition for 90k miles, and was very clean with only a tiny amount of metal “mush” on the magnet. only the second gear syncro showed a little wear, as you would expect, but the rest looked like new.

When I measured the bearing pre-load with the existing shim, it was heavy at 32 in.-lbf., so I needed a thinner shim. I figured the local Honda dealer would have a whole set in stock, I could buy a couple around the thickness I needed, install the best one, and return the other. I figured wrong. The shims are “order only”, none in stock, and about $6.00 each. So, plan B sent me to the local tractor dealer. They had a whole rack of shims, not exactly the right size, but fortunately slightly larger in diameter, and just the right thickness. I bought one, put it the lathe, and turned it down to the correct OD. Cost me 54 cents, no waiting.

Of course then I needed a seal driver. Off-the-shelf seal drivers are flat and have no provision for the lip that protrudes from the outside of a Honda axle seal. This pic from the service manual shows the driver and how the seal fits up into a grove.

I decided to make a driver, similar to the factory tools shown above, but with slight modifications so both seals (they are different sizes on this trans) could be installed with the same driver. Here’s the drawing I started with. Note that there are three separate parts held together by a ˝” bolt.

Here’s what it looked like when finished…

… and again with a seal ready to be driven on.

Happy New Year!

Thanks,
Dave
