Post #DC2H22-95

The main suspension problem Iíve been working on is the rear end wanting to wander back and forth slightly. It felt much like low rear tire pressure. The problem turned out to be the rubber bushings mounting the front of the radius rods. They had enough give to let the wheel move forward and backward, which also made the rear wheels steer. The problem occurred only while cruising down the highway. The solution was to install a traction bar system from
Explicit Speed Performance in Olympia, WA. Dan & John Gordon are a father-son team that builds strut bars, motor mounts, traction bars, and other custom fabricated parts. This traction bar is a strong, well made piece that completely replaces the front cross member and radius rods. It also includes an adjustable torque tube with polyurethane bushings to replace the front motor mount. The system is 10 lbs. lighter than the stock parts it replaces, and also saves 3 lbs. of unsprung weight. Another benefit of this traction bar system on a FWD car is the ability to make caster adjustments. Since caster has no meaning in the rear, I used this adjustment capability to fine-tune the bump steer in the rear.

I had to remove the built in tow hooks and notch the mounting brackets to make it fit around some structural members that I had already made, but the bar will bolt right up, without modification, to a stock FWD 4G or 5G Prelude.

The original configuration used a single bolt to hold the radius rod to the bottom of the lower control arm (LCA) as shown below.

I preferred to mount the radius rod to the top of the LCA, with a support bracket to hold the heim joint bolt in double shear. Here are the brackets I made, which are now part of the system as sold by Explicit Speed Performance.

These pics show the radius rod mounted to the LCA with the double shear brackets in place.

Here are some shots of the whole radius rod mounted up.

Hereís how they look from the wheel well.

These pics show the torque tube motor mount. Note how much additional room is available for headers and large down tubes, etc.

Since the longitudinal brace is not used, I made a bracket for the exhaust flex joint hanger.

I spent about an hour testing and hammering on this traction bar system, and it works beautifully and has solved 95% of the handling problems I was having. Now I can get consistent results while testing alignment settings.

Cheers!
Dave

So you really do drive this car pretty hard.... why else would you need a traction bar.

Nonetheless, it looks great Dave.

He explained why he needed it in his update...the rear-end was wandering a little bit on the highway due to some bushings in the rear suspension flexing and allowing the wheels to shift.
