B18C swapped eg erratic idle.

Hello guys. I'm having some annoying issues with this car. Cold starting the car, idle bounces between 3k and 500. When kept running for about half a minute, it goes smoother, but only goes to 1.5k and bounces to that like hitting rev limiter. After a short drive the idle is fine. Any ideas?

Sounds like the tell tale symptoms of a failing Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). Can search for options for cleaning it (which works with mixed success) or replacing it.

I'll start with this. Thank you! Definetly try cleaning it first, I live in Finland and parts are insanely hard to find and expensive here.

Okay. You may have found the culprit. It's full of black sticky nastiness so no way that valve could function properly.

Okay, little update. IACV is clean now, idle is worse. I did notice that the distributor is not working properly. So I order some parts from uk and just wait and see.

Keep us posted please. I am having a similar issue with my Integra. I just recently replaced my distributor and cap when I got my spark plugs/wires replaced.

Thanks,

- DM

Still issues

Hi!
I replaced distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and leads. It still does that annoying thing when cold. I have cleaned Iacv, it seemed to function properly. When the engine gets to operating temperature it stops mostly. Every now and then the idle starts to hop like cold starting. And today I took a bit of a drive, when I stopped on traffic lights, the idle was pretty ok, but it bounced from 1k to 2.3k. Did that few times. I'm still open for ideas. It would be great to get that pos working after all the work. Thanks in advance!

If cleaning the IACV didn't help, then it's likely that it needs replaced.

Yeah, you maybe right. There should be ways to see if the Iacv indeed is faulty, like plugging the hole with my finger when it's idling cold? I would like to be sure before buying that part. It costs in Finland anything from 300 euros to 500.. Unless I find one cheaper from uk.

I was able to isolate the issue. When cold starting, and the engine made that humping, I disconnected iacv plug. Idle went stable, just a little low. I drove a short trip, when engine was nicely warmed up to operating temp, i plugged Iacv back in, and it worked like a charm. I just ordered new iacv and soon have this issue behind. Thanks for all your input guys!
