First off, I'm not sure exactly where the sound is coming from. I get this really loud annoying grinding sound when the clutch is engaged and I'm coasting without my foot on the gas. It's most loud when I let go of the gas in first and second gear. But in third, fourth, and fifth it doesn't make a noticeable sound. In third gear you can slightly hear it but you'd have to really be listening. I don't hear it at all in 4th and 5th. It doesn't happen at idle either. There is no noise when my foot is on the gas. It's only when I let my foot off of the gas and my car is rolling in first or second gear. It's very strange that the sound is so noticeable in first and second but not the rest. Any ideas? I'll try to post a video soon.
sounds like input shaft bearing. about $100 in parts but you have to pull apart the trans to do it. just went through this with mine and it sounds so much better now! good luck!
mine was also SO far gone. there was 5 ball bearings left in the thing out of I dunno 15 so yours may just not be as bad. id have to hear it to tell for sure.
Replace it sooner than later. I ignored one for about 80k miles. A chunk of the inner race jammed the trans hard in gear. That was exciting.
