Well the black smoke usual means you are burning oil! i would probal say it has nothing to do with running to rich! How many miles you have on your car? it may be a dammaged head gasket or you pistion rings might have deterioated! for some reason you have a leak and the oil is entering the cylinders!

does it smell like rotten eggs? if so, you are running rich. You just have to dick with your timing or look into a VAFC(for VTEC) and a SAFC (for non vtec).

check you fuel pressure regulator, if you have the tools. if not take it to your dealership.

Hello:
I just got my 98 Integra w/ 31000 miles and I took it out on the racetrack for a driving school. All I have on the car that is aftermarket is a new muffler. And someone at the school said that car was running rich because of all the black in the muffler.
Should I try to change the fuel injector cleaner? Or should I just take it to the dealership and talk to someone there.
I dont smell anything funny while I am running the car though.

Well if you're running rich, then your fuel injectors are not clogged.

when he's talking about timing and running too rich do you retard or advance the timing?

well, rotten eggs means that either you cat is not up to operating temp or the catalyst has been poisoned. the rotten egg smell happens when theres no cat or a failed cat.
running rich is a bad thing for the catalyst. the extra hydrocarbons will poison the catalyst over time, and it can regenerate itself back to normal if you let it operate without the presence of excess HC. but this can take a long time.

black is rich guys... blue is oil and white is anti-freeze.

just a black muffler means that you like WOT. at WOT, the stock computer tends to run the engine a little on the rich side to ensure theres no chance of detination. also the computer goes into open loop(ignores O2 sensor), and runs off of stock fuel maps. also when vtec engadges, it will richen the mixture to protect the motor for the sudden change in lift/duration on the cams.

i would suggest some injector clean to insure that the spray patturn is up to par. if the droplets are too large, there may not be enough time for complete combustion(ie. rich).

what mods do you have done? exhaust alone will cause it to run slightly rich, but not enough to cause problems.

if your engine is more than I/H/C/E, then without tuning, you can run rich.

do you actually see a black cloud of smoke when someone drives behind you? if you dont... its normal for you to see carbon buildup on the tip becouse of your driving habits.

Get rid of that ECU and get some real tuning.
