Default is seat belt retractor serviceable?

so, my seat belts are heavily used and now it will not retract(very slowly), that i have to feed it with my hand, in hot dry day it will retract a bit, but if it's cold rainy day it will not retract AT ALL. passenger side is bad and driver side is really really BAD.

so i already go ahead and bought a pair of second hand seat belts that seller claims 'good condition', got it from USA and im from australia so i'd be using ur passenger side for my driver side. (passenger side is likely to be less used)

but just wondering if there is any chance that i can service the retractor. eg clean it up and use WD40 to restore it or better off put a 2nd hand one in ?

I think seat belts have a lifetime warranty, but you might want to call the dealer to check

All seatbelts, for all years' of Acura & Honda, have lifetime warranties. Make an appt. with your local dealer.

The retractors shouldn't be serviced. The retractor controls the belt based on angle/tilt of the belt. The belts lock when the retractor see something over 40 degrees. Make sure the upper anchor can move easily, if if doesn't move easily then this could be your problem. Trying tilting this upper anchor while retracting the belt to see if it helps. If it does take the anchor off and clean up the gunk build. Your problem might not be the retractor at all.

My driver side seat belt has been messed up for a long long time and I thought/heard the thing about "lifetime warrantly"

I saw this topic pop up today and it piqued my interest and i called Delray Acura (which is acuraoemparts.com) and talked to a guy in service.... he had no idea and the guy who could answer it was out today....

I read in my integra manual that came with the car:

Seat Belt Limited Warranty
While seat belts cannot completely remove the possibility of injury, they do provide a very significant level of protection when used properly. Acura believes the best way to enhance your safety is to use your seat belt. To encourage their use, the seat belts should always be in good operating condition.

Time Period
This warranty continues for the useful life of the car.

Warranty Coverage
Acura will repair or replace, at its option, any Acura seat belt component that fails to function properly during normal use. This includes all parts and labor charges.

This Warranty Does Not
Cover:

  • Replacement of a properlyfunctioning seat belt assembly strictly for cosmetic or comfort reasons.
  • Failure caused by abuse, alteration, accidental damage, misuse, or malfunction resulting from a collision.

yeah its a life time warranty, I had it done last year to my 1997, went to the dealership, they had a look at it, and ordered the part and set up an appointment to get the seat belt replaced under warranty

The closest Acura dealership is +100miles away in Peoria...
I'm gonna call the Honda dealers in town to see if they would do it under circumstances.
both sides don't retract properly on mine.

I doubt they will do it. The warranty claim would have to be submitted by Acura, from an Acura dealership. The Honda dealership wouldn't get paid otherwise, and that's only IF, they can order the part. Unless it's the same part number to a Honda automobile, that's in their parts catalog, their parts catalog won't show it listed.

when i JUST brought my DB8 to the "upscale" acura in Annapolis MD they told me:
to come back to set an appointment to LOOK at it and go from there.
ask him just to glance now and then set an appointment to fill out warranty info later.

on our way out he said "oh ill be right out. " im guessing after a quick talk with his manager, he reappeared.

walked to the car. and pulled the WORST seat belt. (which wont go back in at all, and actually got left outside my car one day and ATE my blade up!!!!) he clicked it into the bottom part, pulled a little and said
"NOPE. only if they dont latch." i said
"so thats ALLLL they look for?" he said
"yes, you wanted me to look, and i did!"
me:"well that seems a little vague and you could have told me that when i explained to you for 20 mins inside."
him:"i cant think of EVERYTHING at EVERYTIME... IM DONE WITH YOU"
me:" thats fine you fat piece of [doo doo]"
him:"IM TELLING HIM YOU SAID THAT!!"

so i went back in a talked to the manager, told him that his employee is an old grumpy prick and im going to get AS MANY TEGGYS AS I CAN TO FLOOD ACURA WITH WARRANTY CLAIMS!

Can we start a thread to organize and/or show the number of people who are willing to confront acura about this SAFETY ISSUE?

me doing this alone seems a little like david vs. Goliath

This is from an Acura ServiceNews - "Whenever you work on a seat belt system, never take apart or lubricate the seat belt retractors. The retractors contain many small parts that are easily damaged. Using lubricants on these parts is a sure way to make them fail. If thereís a problem with the retractor, donít mess around, replace it."

And here is the Acura service bulletin for the front seat belt warranty policy.
