I seem to be getting nowhere searching for possible causes of DTC P1660 (A/T-FI Data Line Failure/TCM-ECM-Halt) on my Daughter's Automatic '96 LS Integra. The transmission seems to be hung up in the upper gears and is very sluggish starting off. Starting out in low manually seems to help but take off is still sluggish. When using reverse things seem normal. There seem to be no unusual noises. Fluid level and appearance are ok. I've switched to Mobil1 synthetic ATF. Anyone have any ideas of what the trouble might be?

Sounds like a problem with TCM not shifting you down to the lower gears after slowing down. Check the wire harness first and foremost. The transmission control modual is behind the driver side kick panel. Try tracing the harness and looking for any shorts etc.

^^^ Exactly what I was going to say. The "low" gears 1 & 2 on our cars are very sluggish down low naturally. that's how the computer treats them until higher RPMS so it may not be switching over. how many miles are on the trans/motor? The fluid can look fine but it could very well be time for a re-build too.

Thanks for your quick responses. No that was not me asking on the other forum. Unfortunately her car is at college 250+ miles away from me. Should the car be ok to drive at hwy. speeds should we deceide to let her drive it home? Unfortunately I did not check any fuses. The car is high mileage... about 175,000 but the previous owner changed the transmission fluid every other oil change. I have noted that the transmission shifts kind of hard, especially until warm, but have heard that this is somewhat normal for these transmissions. Is using Mobile1 synthetic ATF ok for this transmission?

Hard shifting with automatic is a common problem...
In my previous g2 in winter, i always had to have 2 keys with me...
one key to start the car, and if i need to stop and get out for a while, i leave it in N and lock the door with the other key.
Otherwise it would get "locked" in P until the car is warmed up.

I think i just realized what you mean by "sluggish"... like the transmission would jerk a bit in 1st to 2nd gear right?
That is also a common problem i experienced with my automatic g2 as well...

The trick is to slightly reduce/life the gas paddle before it shifts from 1st to 2nd, then the transmission would shift smoothly...

Actually, I'm pretty sure the car is not ever using the lower gears.

I would say yes, it's definitely okay for her to drive the 250 miles home to you to get it checked out at your local mechanic or even by yourself. As long as the gears are all engaging properly she should be able to keep it in D4 at highway speeds and be fine.

And like Eric said, hard shifting before the warm up in the automatic is VERY common. there were 3 cops parked on my street this morning when my first shift happened and they all heard it and turned around to look lol.
